Question Pet tags

Not earth shattering I know, but can anyone tell me what is required on a dog tag in France. Both my dogs are chipped but the only translation I can get for this is 'puce'. If I put that on a tag will people think it says fleas!!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Dogs here don't seem to wear tags. Up until a couple years ago, France used tattoos to id dogs - either in the ear or, for a valuable dog who might be subject to being dog-napped, on the inner back leg. (Apparently some dog-napped dogs had their ears cut to eliminate the tattoo.)

What they sometimes do now is to tattoo the letter "P" where a tattoo would normally go - which indicates to anyone finding the dog that he has a "puce." (Yes, that's what it's called here.)

Check with a vet when you get to France. There is a form to fill out to transfer the chip/puce i.d. to your new address in France.
Cheers,
Bev

As Bev says, tattooing is less prevalent than it was.

One 'gotcha' is the fact that not all electronic implants work with all the sensors available. Depends which country you're coming from.

We came from the UK, our 7 UK-chipped mutts all showed up on our vets scanners.

You talk about 'tags', I guess you mean electronic ones, but one thing which we'd never seen in the UK is the fluourescent (sp? sorry, it's late) collars witha bell. Very useful, especially in the hunting season, if Fido goes walkabout then its less likely that some French Fred with a rifle will mistake him for dinner......

Most hunting shops will supply them, there are the basic plain type and for a few cents more ones with q/r clips (the ubiquitous ones like on backpacks). The same shops will also supply stainless steel 'covers' with your phone number stamped firmly on them.

Hope this helps

Mick Dyer.

Hi:

The current term used is : puce.

But in fact that is short for : puce électronique.

Take an example the other way around.

English: tag

You will probably get in a small dictionnary: price sticker ( étiquette de prix ).

Yours,

giantpanda
