Hi!

I am sorry, under the latest conditions required, you are going to find it difficult to come and stay, except as a tourist.

See the following references ( the part - Etrangers Commaunautaires does not apply to you):

Etrangers en France - Service-public.fr

Yours,

giantpanda

I was amazed to find it works, but if you don't want to get married, you may want to consider getting PACS'ed. It's a sort of civil partnership that falls slightly short of marriage - but be aware, it requires a process almost like divorce to get out of! An American I know managed to get a carte de séjour based on her being PACS'ed to a French national - though this was a couple years ago and the laws have been changing recently.
Cheers,
Bev

Hi!

the 1st hurdle is the marriage and the necessary papers

Here some details if you marry outside France with a French:

Mariage civil - Service-public.fr

Up till now, if you can speak fluently French etc; you can get the French Nationality after 2 years - there is a new law in the works , which could push this off to 4 years.

Your should see here: regroupement familial, because it will be the base of your rights in France.

Regroupement familial - Service-public.fr

Yours,

giantpanda

What giantpanda said. I spent 20 months as a "sans papiers" (illegal alien) AFTER being married to a French person. It is not fun.

You need to know the local language, and honestly it would probably be easier to get married outside France, then go to the French consulate and get a livret de famille and apply for your visa there (it's almost automatic). If you get married in France, you can apply for a visa from the local prefecture - but there are some prefectures that appear not to have gotten the latest bulletin on this, and I know some people who were told they have to go back to their home country to get a spouse visa.

Of course, that said, if you marry the guy, you won't be allowed to work for the first year or two (the rules keep changing).

Then again, I wouldn't waste my time looking for a job during this upcoming visit to Nice. It's highly unlikely you can find a job that will get you a working visa - and wouldn't you rather spend the time with your boyfriend. Moving to Nice is going to take some longer-term planning.
Cheers,
Bev

Hi, I am Swiss, married to Filipina. For the time being we are living in the Philippines, but we want to move to Europe. Switzerland and the European Union have some bilateral agreements, so that, considering residence, we enjoy the same rights as E.U. citizen. As far as I am informed, the non-E.U. wife of a Communitarian, with whatever visa she has and once in the country, can apply for residence. As family (wife/husband) of an E.U citizen one has the right to live in any Schengen country with her husband/wife. A few years ago, in France, there was not even a residence permit required, but I was informed that this has changed. This regulations change all the time, it is often difficult to obtain adequate information and the law text is often very far from the way this laws are applied in real life.
