Default Tax rates for Expats in France

Hi

I am moving to france on a long term assignment.

Can anyone help on how the tax is levied for the expats? Is there any guideline available?

Appreciate some pointers in this regard, thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Basically, as an expat in France, you'll be taxed just like any other legal resident of France - which means on your worldwide income. France has tax treaties with a variety of countries to avoid double taxation of various sorts of income you're likely to be receiving back at home while resident in France.

There is an overview of French taxation available in English from the French tax authorities here: http://www.impots.gouv.fr/portal/dep...ptive_1006.pdf
Just be aware that this is about 2 or 3 years old and some details (especially the rates) have changed. A more up to date overview (with less detail) is available from the AngloInfo website here: French Income Tax and Being Tax Resident in France - French Riviera - AngloINFO Riviera (France)

Give a shout if you have specific questions about your situation. If we can't answer them directly, we can at least point you in the right direction for an authoritative response. (How's your French, by the way? It's rare for the French Fisc to translate forms or instructions into any other language.)
Cheers,
Bev

Hi!

If you become a French fiscal resident, you have to declare your world income, and the taxes paid on the foreign income.

If you have EC income, these will not be taxed on France, except financial income, which will pay a total of 29% tax - 18 % + 11% ( for 2008 income ).

Notwithstanding, your foreign income come to play, in as much as your French income will come possibly in a differently rate of taxation.

Otherwise French allowances are based on each income type, so it is not possible to give you a table how you concieve it.

The following one, valid for 2007 income, is based on French taxable income ( Gross minus relative French allowances.)

Calcul de l'impôt sur le revenu : barème et taux 2008

To get an real impression, you need to do a simulation.

You can try here ( take the : complet ")

Calcul en ligne de l'impôt sur le revenu (IR)

But I do not think it will take foreign income into consideration.

Yours,

giantpanda
