Changement de Statut "Etudiant" à "Salarié"

Hi, I have a titre de séjour "étudiant autorise à travailler avec un titulaire accessoire", valid until September 30th.. I was wondering about changing my status so I can work full time instead of studying. I've heard kiss and tell about one month grace periods (so I'm not so stressed about timing, should I be?) and also about the extreme difficulty converting one's status from "étudiant" to "salarié". The kind of job I'm looking for is a simple clothing store, café/bar/restauarant post. My level of French isn't bad, and could improve at light speed with daily exposure and speaking, but I have only completed the niveau intermédiare at the Sorbonne. What are my chances?!?

I'm pretty confident I can find SOMEone to hire me, but the part I'm worried about is the bureaucratic mess at the prefecture. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Will

The problem you're up against is that it's highly doubtful that an employer would be able to sponsor you for a work visa doing the sort of work you're looking for. There is a process for an employer to sponsor someone for a work visa, however, it's not easy and it can be expensive for the employer. (Plus, you'd still have to go back to the US to process the visa.)

Without a work visa, you will have trouble finding someone to hire you (legitimately, anyhow). Most employers won't touch anyone without a carte de séjour with full working privileges. (See any of the job ads in FUSAC to see what I mean.)

AFAIK the only folks eligible to change a student visa into a working one are those who have gotten a job on completion of a university program and the job must be related to the program of study. If you're looking to renew your titre de séjour, you should be starting the process very soon (i.e. two months before the expiration date of your current card).
Cheers,
Bev
