Talking My Motorcycle

BEV:
I am thinking of bringing my Motorcycle with me to France when we move to France in March 2009. It is a Honda Valkerie, 1500 cc six cylinder touring bike. It weighs approx 400 kilos. What kind of functionaire song and dance can I expect if I decide to bring it with me?

Hi!

Here all the red tape - see second part - and do not expect me to translate that.

Moto : carte grise et immatriculation

Cool My Motorcycle

Thanks for the heads up on the red tape involved in bringing my motorcyle from the states to france. I will research the link you included in your mesage. My first read of it indicates, essentially, that what I need is the title and original bill of sale along with current inspection documents. Furthur research just might indicate that it may be too much trouble bringing it which would be a downer. I hate to have to sell it here in the states.
Thanks again for the heads up.

Hi!

If you wait much longer, you might have to have it pass a " Contrôle Technique ", which they are now considering for motocycles too.

Yours,

giantpanda

PS. Are you aware of the regulations, if you are not an EU citizen, for settling in France?

The link Giant Panda gave you is probably your best source. If Delaware is one of the states where you can just exchange your driving license (check with the US consulate toward the end of this year - the list has been changing lately), get an international license through Triple A that shows your motorcycle qualification. Otherwise you have to do two separate licenses - one for the car, and another for the bike.

If they require a controle technique, it isn't fatal, but check to see if there are any different (usually stricter) requirements than in the States. Motorcycles are popular here, and depending on how much they are going to charge you to bring it over, you may want to consider just getting a new bike here.
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks, for the information Bev & Giant Panda. My research into costs is leading me to think about selling the bike and buying a new one in France. It would be simpler and less costly. Thanks Again.
