Default Water Charges in France

We have a new member that is asking the following question:

"She has read that water charges in certain parts of France can be expensive. She is deciding on whether to settle in the Lot and Garonne or the Charente areas of France. Any info on water charges here? Also if someone has a pool does this substantially increase the water charges. Never having had a pool she wonders whether to employ someone to clean it and if so what is the cost of that or can they do it themselves. Being pensioners, they have to watch out for extra costs."

If we can support her as a community and come up with our best answers, I know she will appreciate it.

Thank you for your assistance

I haven't found the water charges to be that much different in price to the Uk. They're marginally more expensive because they are all on a meter, but I haven't felt the need to ration water and start sharing baths yet.

Hi!

The price of water is very regional - it can vary in proportion from 1 to 10, and even higher.

further oneFurther one of the important elements in the price, depends on the " eaux usées " - Are you connected to the sewyer or not.

If you have fosse spetique, that does not mean that this is necessarily cheaper.

then you need to find following out:

- Has the fosse being officially checked recently?
- There is an obligation to do this - but this can take time
- You need to see the report, and what has to be done?
- You need to know, what particupation the Commune will make to the costs ( can varu between 0% and 100%).

Do you have any information on what the price of water is exactly? For example, how much does the average family have to pay for water in France?

I have to agree with the previous comments too - our water is the responsibility of the local commune and as we are all metered we only pay for what we use and the rates have been very reasonable. That said we do not have a pool or large garden to water!

However it seems that anybody that does, sinks a bore hole and uses that to water the garden etc.

Kind regards,
Alex

Hi!

For information, the use of wells is also subject to the local water restrictions emitted by the Préfecture.

Further, they are seriously considering the obligation to install a meter on private wells.
