Default Moving to France for 4 months. Rent or buy car?

Hi
I will be moving from USA to France for 4 months. My husband will be at CERN Laboratory. We are looking into a second car. Would it be crazy to try to buy a used car and get plates and insurance and then sell it before leaving?
Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

You'll be happy to know that you are not the first expat to run into this situation and there is even a special license plate for you! You may be able to buy a used car without having to pay the VAT. You get a special license plate that is only valid during the period you will be in the country. At the end of that time, you sell the car back to the dealer and he resells the car.

Cars are more closely controlled on resale in France than in the US, so you should be just fine buying a used car from a car dealer. Even if you bought from an individual, the car has to be inspected before the transfer. (And again on the resale.) If you go through a dealer they will take care of all that stuff.
Cheers,
Bev

Default Super U

You can hire a car from any Super U supermarket for only 150 euros a month, which also includes insurance etc.
Thats what I'd do.

Without doubt Super U is by far the cheapest. The other regular suppliers can be very expensive. We use Super U all the time and have never had any problems.

Haven't heard about this car rental thing from Super U. Maybe it's only in some areas? Where have you been able to rent a car from Super U? It does sound like a deal!
Cheers,
Bev

If you google Super U, go on to the main site, type in your region and department then click on Location U, it should give you whats available.
In my town, you can hire vans, minibuses and cars, the car for 150 euros a month is a Fiat Panda.
Hope this helps
