Default healthcare for over sixties

Hi,
I'm Sheila, and my husband and I are moving to France later this year. We have heard so many different stories about how much insurance cover we will need. Can anyone give us an idea how much top up cover is likely to cost once living there? Also what this will cover.
Thanks in anticipation.

Assuming that one or the other of you will be working, a mutuelle (top-up coverage to the national health care) is usually available on a shared cost basis from your employer. A mutuelle usually runs something under 100€ per person per month, though the sharing arrangements between employee and employer can vary (often 50-50 or 40-60).

If you're retiring to France, you'll probably have to get some form of expat insurance. Most of the big insurance companies in the UK offer some form of expat health insurance.
Cheers,
Bev

Hi!

If you have a British State pension , then you would be entitled to an E121 and then you would be entitled without problems in France to the the general health insurance CMU - which covers you basically at 70% - of course it is more complex than that.NB. Only one person of a couple has to have an E121, the other is then automatically covered under the French " ayant-droit" ruling.

To be on the safe side, you would be counselled to have a French tip-up, which at your age could cost anything like Euro 60 a month per person, whereby the remebursement for glasses, teeth and hearing aids ae very very low.

At least if that is not affordable, and you do not qualify for a State top up ( means tested ) the minimum top-up coverage would be for hospital care which would cost under Euro 10 per peson.

NB. The hospital charges are not very transparent. Most operation are covered 100%, but there are elements which none the less can be charged and that can cost a fortune at more than Euro 3000 a day.

The cost of living is possibily a loittle less than in GB - it that is much too specific to able to give you any real pertinent indications, especially it will depend if you live in the France Profonde or in a city.

Yours,

giantpanda
