Hi Alison - welcome to the forum!

The first thing in job hunting is where are you coming from? If you're from the UK, you're fine. You can just start job hunting. If you're coming from outside the EU, you're going to have a work permit (i.e. visa) issue.

The second thing is your level of French. It is extremely difficult to find any sort of job in France if you don't speak and write French at a "decent" conversational level at least. Even in international companies where English is the official working language, you have to do your day to day errands, fill out forms and whatever else in French if you're living in France.

That said, you can sometimes find job ads on Internet job sites (like Monster.fr) that are in English. Assuming you have working privileges in France you can try your luck there or use the online versions of most French newspapers. But any jobs posted in English language newspapers in France (mostly expat group publications) would be primarily for stuff like babysitting and casual work.

You could also try FUSAC (France-USA Contacts FUSAC - Petites annonces pour anglophones de Paris), a give-away want ad paper that is based in Paris. But they don't have much in the way of ads for the south of France.
Cheers,
Bev

Hi Bev

Thank you for your reply.

Yes.. I am from the UK.. I've just returned from Asia after spending 10 years teaching within international schools.

Basically, I want to eventually set up a business selling my products from thailand and doing thai massage.

I was thinking of applying to some local english language schools in the meantime, but dont seem to be able to find links to any english language academy.

I would like to base myself in the south of france . I was thinking of making a short trip there soon to see whats available. I've searched forums and expat jobs etc.. but i dont seem to be able to find much information on south of france.

Do you think it will be easier if i just turn up in Nice and hunt around?

thanks ever so much for the information and your prompt reply...

cheers

Alison

Teaching English is kind of a double-edged type of job. Ideally, you should have a TESOL or TEFL qualification. But many language schools will hire native English speakers without a teaching qualification - the catch is that the pay is much lower, and you're competing with all the other native English speakers who are willing to work for whatever the language schools are willing to pay.

Turning up in Nice to start job hunting isn't a half bad idea. There are plenty of small language schools around and if you're set on that area, it's probably the best way to scope out the market for English teachers.

Keep us posted how you make out in your job hunt.
Cheers,
Bev

Hi Bev

Thank you so much.

I am tesol trained with 10 years experience and would just like to get my foot in the door somewhere and earn money whilst i get settled down and try other avenues.

I am still debating whether south of france is a good option as I have read negative feedback on the forum.

I guess secretarial/admin work is out as i dont have the language skills yet.

So, there are no newspapers in english for jobs? I may have to get to nice and try..

thank you....

Alison
