Hi I've lived in France and Portugal and have done a lot of things with out planning Permission, and never had a problem yet .What you get away with all comes down to luck .Whether anyone reports you.I had constant battles with one set of neighbours in France always calling the Gendarmes for things I was doing, but that was as far as it went.Fortunately they are both dead now.
The French are very hot on sanitation as many peoples sewerage systems do not comply with the regulations. They are having a big purge in my area (Mayenne) at the moment but as I don't live there,I hope I have got away with it,as mine certainly doesn't comply.
Good luck in your venture.

Regulation is in place to have all fosses septiques in France bought up to code by 20?14? IIRC.

I was contacted about this a couple of years ago by some officially appointed firm, but was in Thailand at the time. If I remember correctly, it is a compulsory check, and one that I have to pay a not inconsiderable sum for. It is a fixed rate per fosse as well, and I have three

Yeah,I seem to remember getting letters before. My French neighbour has a sealed tank and gets it emptied regularly as it's not possible to put in the fosses as they only have a small garden which contains their well which supplies both our water. When I want to empty my tank,I pump the fluid to a hole up the top of my garden with a pipe concealed underground.I know they would not accept this method. So if they ever catch up with me,when I'm over there,I will have to try and go down the 'sealed tank' route or have an expensive bill having the fosse put in.Alternatively, hopefully in the future, they may forget about it???????.......Yeah and 'pigs may fly'. Incidentally,it costs 50 Euro's for the privilege of them inspecting it.

Default planning, building etc

Hi Emma,
All building law & permits changed about a year ago - the best ref to everything I know is on angloinfo website - there is a complete section under building in france.
I can't send you the link but prefix angloinfo with provence and its v easy to find.
It depends on where you' re going to be and the attitude of the local mairie.
Good luck,
