Default Resoureces for finding rental properties

Hi all,

Been trying to find some resources for renting properties long term. As with any desirable location though it seems to be a 100 to 1 ratio of "holiday" rentals to "long-term" rentals no matter what I search. I've found a few sites that seem to have longer term rentals but would like to know if anyone has any other resources. Here are the sites I've found:

French Locations specialize in long term lets in France and long term rental accommodation in France
Long Term Lets In France - Gites In France - Rental Property In France

Neither of those sites is really thorough although the first one has some nice properties and is definitely the better of the two.

How do most people find properties? Do they go and look? My wife and I are headed over for 4 weeks starting the end of the month to look around the South West for areas that we may like and I'd like to be aware of what are the best ways to find properties for rent.

Thanks,
d

From the two sites you reference, I take it you're looking for sites in English. The other big factor is whether you are looking for furnished or unfurnished.

OTOH, the standard (at least for starters) if your French is up to it is PAP (Particuliers à particuliers) IMMOBILIER De Particulier A Particulier - Annonces immobilières de particuliers - Immobilier | PAP.fr Look under "Location" and then the departement number for the area you're searching in. PAP is for landlords looking to rent directly, thus avoiding the (heavy) agency fee.

Otherwise, most folks talk to an agency - which will charge you 1 - 2 months' rent as a finders fee. Be very careful you don't look at the same property twice with different agents, because if you rent it, you'll owe both of them the agency fee! There are a few "international" agencies (like Century21) but they

Standard leases for unfurnished property run for 3 years, with rent increases spelled out in the lease terms - also terms for breaking the lease should you need to.
Cheers,
Bev

depending on which part of SW you want to go to, and what type/size property you are looking for, I may be able to help

Hi Lindy, we'd be looking somewhere fairly close to the coast and probably close to Hossegor or Biarritz mostly due to surfing. I will know more in a month or so as we're headed out there to explore the are in detail but are kind of trying to get an idea.

We'd probably want a 2-bedroom house or apartment. Obviously a house is better but the costs are more important to us.

Thanks.
