Hi Paul - have you ever looked into the local AVF group in your area? I'm in one of the AVF groups in Essonne (AVF = Accueil des Villes Françaises) and we have a couple of different activities for English speakers and for French people who want to practice their English.

Not all AVFs have foreign language groups, but I would think there are lots of English speakers in the Versailles area. Here is the information:

AVF Versailles
3 rue Saint Simon
78000 VERSAILLES
Tél : 01 30 21 64 01

Permanences

Mardi de 10h à 12h
Jeudi de 14h30 à 16h30
Pour nos 'Jeunes Actifs' le samedi de 10h à 12h
au local, 3 rue Saint Simon
Hors vacances scolaires

AVF is an association under the law of 1901. There is usually a membership fee of 25 or 30 euros per year. Some activities have a separate charge, if they have to pay rent for where they meet or if there are costs that are incurred. But the association isn't out to make money off its members.
Cheers,
Bev
