Default Canadian new to Lyon

Hello fellow North Americans or English speaking expats.
I am a Canadian (with rusty French) who has just moved to Lyon. Just moved here from Australia and prior to this was in the UK and the US and Canada before this.
I am after contacts, new friends, etc. My partner is working already in Lyon and I am attempting to settle into life here (language, culture) before working so if anyone is up for coffee, walks, etc. let me know. There is only so much CNN and BBC one can watch on TV!

Hi and welcome (to the forum and to France)!

I'm a bit far away to manage coffee or walks (in the Ile de France region just around Paris) but I can certainly understand how you feel. I came to France 13 years ago and it took me ages to settle in - but in my case, I had major immigration difficulties.

Keep an eye out for an association called AVF (Accueil des Villes Françaises). They have several chapters in Lyon, including one called Lyon-International where I suspect you could find a few anglophones.

AVF LYON-RHONE INTERNATIONAL (69 Rhône)
5 Place de la Baleine
69005 LYON
mardi 17h - 21h
jeudi 10h30 - 13h
tél. 04 78 42 50 03

The hours listed are when they hold their weekly "open house" to sign up members and answer general questions.

The English website for the national organization is AVF -- Welcome

The AVF has been a real life-saver to plenty of newcomers in France (including me). Only, in my case, it took me seven years to find them.
Cheers,
Bev

Default me too!

Hi -

My husband and I (we are mid 30s) moved to Lyon 2 mo ago from Montreal, Canada and are getting a little lonely!

I work at Universite Claude Bernard Lyon1 in as a faculty developer and he is developing a European market for a large manufacturer. I don't really know what else to say about us... we enjoy food, love travelling, go to the gym fairly regularly, miss our families. Sounds pretty dull right now but it has been a long week! I have never worked in French before, so that is adding an extra level of challenge to my new job. But I really like it!

We live in the 6th, just south of Parc Tete D'Or.
Anyone for a picnic? A drink after work? An afternoon coffee?

My wife and I will be staying in Lyon 26-29 Sept at Hotel des Artistes with an eye to moving to the area. We'd love to meet with expats living in Lyon for coffee / wine / whatever.

Great - We will be in town, so drop us a line in September at siarachina@hotmail.com and we can set something up.

The AFV (recommended above) is good, I have recently found an English-speaking mothers' group and we are getting settled.

ps - jobs that don't require French are rare, but the CPE offers engineering courses in English and you may find something there. CPE Lyon
