Hi,

I moved here last August (for schooling) and from my own experience, and that of my friend's, finding a job could be difficult... But I've noticed that mostly depends on your ability to speak French.

As you're from Belgium, is it fair to say that you're pretty good when it comes to speaking French?

Also, what types of jobs are you looking for? Anything? Or something more relevant?

Cheers,
-SJ

Well, fair enough.

I think fluency in French and English is definitely a helper. I have friends who have been searching for jobs (basically looking for anything) and the fact that they speak English really helped in certain spots. However, their lack of French is definitely a killer... So, you should be well suited, so long as you start searching BEFORE you get here.

As far as Villeurbanne... Ahem, I wouldn't say its "nice" per se.

It depends on what you're looking for I suppose. I live here, because I currently live on campus at INSA-Lyon. However, the ONLY reason I would live in Villeurbanne is because it is close to my classes... It is a suburb of Lyon, so it is kind of boring, to be honest. If we want to go out at night, we always go to Lyon.

In fact, I will probably be moving to Lyon for this summer and maybe again during the next year. The rents are quite expensive (especially compared to Canada), so I have been looking at collocation for this summer, and sharing apartments with people. So far, the response has been good. Getting a studio apartment can be between 300-500 euros depending on the size of the place, however, the rent seems to drop drastically when you share with people.

I would advise trying to find a job (or at least having an idea of where you might work) before you pick a specific location to live in.

Cheers,
-SJ

I am a Dutch girl who is moving to Lyon in a few weeks. I would love to meet some people who already live there and speak English or Dutch to show me around a little! I am 28 and moving here with my boyfriend who originally is from Lyon.

Let me know if you are up to meeting!

thanks,
Liz

Hey! I am moving back to Lyon this September after living there 2009-2010. It is a great city, looking at your post I often found that speaking english and french was very useful in terms of jobs!
