Default Nice is Paradise

Hello. I went to the South of France for the first time on holiday last year. Fell in love with Nice. If I could afford it then I would pack my bags and go to live there now.

Is it really expensive to live in Nice? What kind of a monthly amount could I get by on if I was renting a 1 bedroom flat? Could I live there for around 2500 euros a month which is what I am earning now. Or should I just keep dreaming...

One tool I found on the internet that could help you out is the Economic Resource Reports on cost of living for a variety of spots around the world including Nice, France. You have to buy the report, but it is only $19. I have never used the service, but you may want to check it out as that is pretty inexpensive. The website URL is ERI Salary Survey Data.

All the best,

Michael

Hi!

It very much depends on your standard of living.

I would suggest you use your search machine:

Immobilier Nice studio location

And better get a map ( on Internet ) - Try Mappy of Via Michelin, so you know where they are.

Are you thinking of working there? Then that is quite a different propostion - you will find it rather difficult to get a permanent job in France at a decent level.

If that is the case, do not move permanently until you have a job ( best with a CDI - Contrat à Durée Indéterminée, and this after the trial perid ).

Yours,

giantpanda

being from Nice, i think you can totally live here with 2500 euros, the average salary is around 1000 euros and people originally from Nice are forced to move out because the rents are getting too expensive
To rent a single bedroom, in a safe area, you need around 600 to 800 euros per month.
A coffee is 2 euros , a loaf of bread is 1,50 euros, a movie ticket is 10 euros, a meal is about 20/30 euros person in a normal restaurant.

I can see why you fell in love with Nice, being my hometown, i still find it beautiful, but living here can be "hell" , the traffic is horrible, things move slowly as people aren't really "workholics" here (don't forget it's a southern town!) and you may find it hard to deal with the lack of politeness from my fellow "niçois"
should you need more info, feel free to email me

If you can continue to make 2500€ per month in Nice then that is plenty to live on. On the other hand i wouldn't expect to just plop down here and find a job for that salary. If you can bring that income with you then fine, but otherwise it's another story. Salaries are generally low here. Besides that it's not easy for anyone to find a job here, much less a foreigner. Finally you'd have to have a work visa and for that you'd have to have the job first, etc. But if you can keep your job and telecommute or something, then you should be fine with that amount of money.

Hi!

Beware:

If you work in France per internet, you can do only do that as :

-an employee ( and your firm French or other ) will have to pay social charges in France. A foreign firm will hardly accept, even if they do it over a " portage ".

-as a " travailleur indépendant ", and then you would be subject to URSSAF, and then Euro 2500 will certainly not be enough.

Yours,

giantpanda

Hi guys,
Just been reading all the posts. Soooo interesting. I too fell in love with nice although I was only there for a few days.
I would love to live there and have started looking into this more.
Can anyone pls tell me what facilities there are for rainy days, what happens in the winter? Is it really cold? Nightlife? Transportation esp to the airport because I work in aviation etc. I know these questions seem silly, but I don't want to confuse a few days of sunshine and fun in nice for a reality of hell!!!
Many thanks,
Madi
