Default French language programs in Lyon?

Bonjour -

I currently live in Lyon and have been taking a free French class at a social center. Unfortunately, the class only meets for two hours per week, and I am finding my French improving at a rather slow pace. I notice that several people in this forum are taking language courses in Lyon. I would love to hear what you have to say about your respective institute. Frankly, I feel a bit overwhelmed by the number of schools and since they're all relatively expensive, I want to make a good choice. So far, I've narrowed down my options to:

Lyon Bleu
AF
Universite Catholique de Lyon

Merci pour votre aide! Hope everyone's having a good holidays season.

ciao ngan, i was just about to wax poetic on the alliance francaise to you, but realize i already did a month ago or so. What is this free class at a social center? i am currently not taking any class, so 2hrs/wk for free is better than zero.

There is a center that you may want to add to you list called ecole inflexyon, its small but that usually means good, the price is comparable to af, so yes, they are all expensive. Otherwise, going the university route is bound to be less expensive, like the language school at Lyon II--

i can totally sympathize with feeling overwhelmed, and just remember, part of learning is speaking! which generally is free, lol. good luck!

Thank you rollerbahn. I'll look into inflexyon again. Did you do the intensive 3 hours/day 5 days/wk?
If yes, did you find it too crammed? I am considering the 3 days/wk with 3 hours each session in order to give my brain some time to process the knowledge. I am also doing laguage exchanges with local French, so I see the class as more of a grammar/usage/sentence structure building kind of opportunity.

Thank you. I will message you about the free course.

Hi Ngan,
I'm new to Lyon as well and looking to improve my French....I can't really afford language classes - is that free class you mentioned still running? I would also love to meet some people (local or not) who would like to get together maybe once or twice a week just to talk and practice. If you are interested, you can reach me at dancereh at gmail.com

Thanks!

I'm also interested in finding out about this free French class you mention, is it the one at ACFAL Formation?

I have heard that the best two French language programs in Lyon are Alliance Francaisand Catholic University ILCF. I know someone who went to Alliance Francais and said it was great, it was for 15h/week 9am to 12pm 3 hrs per day, 380 euro per month.

Catholic University ILCF have monthly course and semester course. My friend is currently doing this course and she says there is a lot of homework and they put a lot of focus on writing, but they take their time to explain things to you.

You can also join AVF of Lyon - not the international AVF but for French, non Lyon people. They meet as often as 2 times a week and this is great place to practice your Conversational French for free.

Hey!

When I was here about ten years ago, the CIEF at Lyon2 was just getting started. And even then, it was REALLY good. So, I can only imagine that ten years of experience has made them even better. Here's a link to their site:

Centre International d'Études Françaises

It's a school that is designed to help foreign students prepare for either further studies or work here in France. They're really good about giving you info about what to do "next."

Anyway, good luck!
