Default Health Insurance Coverage for Americans

We are looking to retire to the Mayenne area. My husband has a European Union passport but has not lived in the UK for about 35 years. He contributed to the NHI in England while he worked there.

Will I (an American) and my husband (the British one) be eligible for French medical insurance and, if so, is there a period of time before it will be in effect. And from what time is that calculated (purchase of a house, start paying taxes, take up residency. etc.)

Marsha

Hi!

See here for more information

French Healthcare - A Brief Overview - View topic :: Total France

As soon has he had a British State pension, then he qualifies automatically to the basic French medicial insurance ( up till now, bcause there could be something in the works).

Now that you would that you as ( ayant-droit ) are also qualifiy for the Taxe Vitale.

Now that give you a coverage of 70% of the standard tarifs of the CPAM ( Caisse Primaire d' Assurance Maladie ).

One thing you have to understand, that does not mean automatically 70% if the bill - that is another matter , because each " act " are valued, but these can be charge higher.

Bascially it is advisable to have a top up ( called complémentaire or mutuelle) That according to the degree of coverage, can cost around Euro 60 per person per month.

If somebody comes to France, and has not worked previously in GB, he will have to pay a contribution, based on the last year's income.

Then the contribution will beworked out according to the formular:

Revenu fiscal de référence* - 7083** = Result

Result x 8% = contribution of the family for a full year.

* That is your gross income, minus the French income specific allowances.

** that was the 2006 sul, which is supposed to be adajusted this year, but no information out.

Yours,

giantpanda
