Question sending foie gras

Hi everyone,

I would like to send some foie gras to the US but have been told by several people that it's not entirely legal. However, a friend of mine was able to bring foie gras back into the US in the past (2 years ago to be exact), which encourages me to think that perhaps it's possible after all...

The same people who advised against sending foie gras said that terrine and mousse are allowed !?

Merci,
Ngan

Bringing contraband like fois gras into the States is always easier than sending it.

Last I knew, getting meat products of any sort into the US required that they be properly packaged and labeled with all ingredients. I'm not sure how the local laws that ban fois gras will affect your ability to send it but there are a number of cities that ban it altogether.

Your best bet is to see if you can find a fois gras vendor online that can ship to the US. (The one I just checked claims they have been unable to reach the US Dept. of Agriculture to find out the requirements.)

My German aunt and uncle used to send us cans of German Leberwurst - labeled for customs purposes as "Christmas cookies." They claimed that the customs people were somewhat more lenient over the Christmas holidays. That was 30 years ago, however, and I can't vouch that it still works.
Cheers,
Bev

Thank you, Bev. I've decided to stick to non-meat gifts. Besides, I am a bit grossed out by foie gras now having learned, while researching on its ban, how disgusting the process of making foie gras is.

Happy foruming,
Ngan
