Default English teaching...

I'm an American that's been living in France near Avignon for about 6 month now. My French is still very much at the beginners level but I'm learning every day. I've been thinking about the possibility of teaching English either in a small school or to individuals. Any advice or pointing me to someone in or around the Avignon area would be greatly appreciated. I don't have any kind of teaching certificate but would be willing to obtain one.

Not to be a bringer of bad news but there's a few things you should keep in mind. First of all you cannot teach in the public school sector since it's considered a civil service; as such, only French or EU nationals are able to.

If you want to do some casual tutoring you might consider posting up some printed advertisements in local store windows, or putting one on Petites annonces gratuites d'occasion - leboncoin.fr. To teach in an actual language school you would need to be qualified, not only because there are so many English teachers available that you have to at least match the competition, but also because being a native speaker does not necessarily mean that you are capable of teaching your language. Not speaking French limits your options to perhaps only casual conversation practice.
