Default French Company or Self Employed?
If I want to work self employed in france do I need to register as a French company? I have a uk limited company but will be moving to france soon and have been advised I would need to have a French siret number in order to work free lance or self employed?!
Any advice would be appreciated

There is no real "self-employed" category in France, in large part because you need a "statut" in order to be properly registered to pay your cotisations.

Depending on the nature of your work, you can start out as an "auto-entrepreneur" which is a simplified form of self employment. Payment of cotisations and income taxes is based on your turnover, with no accounting for expenses and all required. Details are here: Portail officiel des auto-entrepreneurs
