Default laws concerning dogs

Are there any laws concerning leashing your dog? Also are you required to register your dog with the local maire? I have two dogs that are already microchipped with current shots (including rabies vacs.). Finally, how long is the quaratine period for animals?

Basically, you do have to keep your dog on a leash whenever he's off your property. In parks and away from most roads, people often let their dogs off their leashes, but technically, they have to remain within "voice control" of the owner.

There's no registration of dogs or cats with the local mairie, but you should get a regular vet and keep your dog's carnet de santé up to date with annual vaccinations, especially if you need or want a European pet passport (necessary to board your dog or take him to certain camp grounds and other facilities).

There also isn't a quarantine period here anymore - though depending on where you're coming from, your pet's vaccinations and health certificate need to be in order on arrival.
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks for reply bev. I have a health certificate from the USDA to clear my dogs for flight leaving US. Accourding to my vet this is pretty much the same as a pet passport. Im planning on travelling by train from paris to lyon. Would this document allow me to board with my dogs or do i need an actual Eu pet passport?

I think your dog should be ok on the train. They normally don't require much paperwork for the train. Depending on the breed, he may need to be muzzled (if he's not traveling in a carrier), but I think that's about it.

The EU pet passport is for places like (some) hotels, camp grounds and, of course, any boarding kennels and such.
Cheers,
Bev

Thanks again bev, bringing my dogs is the biggest problem i'll have. I was stressing big time as none of my family in france knew how to go about it. This forum has been a tremendous help for me.

Just had a quick look at the SNCF site for info on dogs traveling on trains here. You may want to take a look at this: Transport de votre animal de compagnie | aide.voyages-sncf.com

Seems to indicate that you will need a European pet passport - and that your pet will need a ticket (half price to a people ticket).
Cheers,
Bev

Imported animals are subjected to be chipped, see your local vet.
Temporary import not in teh law, and nto defined.

Leash in public places and even muzzle for category 2 dogs
Chiens dangereux : description, interdictions et obligations - Service-public.fr

Category one dogs are special cross breeds known as attack dogs. Severe restrictions

Thanks for reply. My dogs are already microchipped. Only left is to get rabies test/vac 30 days before departure. I assume my dogs are cat.1 as they are gotti pitbulls.

John, make sure they are chipped with the right kind. I am having to put an additional chip into my dog; the one she got at the pound 7 years ago apparently does not comply with EU readers. For reference, the one that can't be read is a 9-digit AVID chip.
