Visa needed?

Hello,

I am an American and I currently live in the UK with my husband who is a British citizen. I have an 'Indefinite Leave to Remain' visa.

We are considering moving to France in the next five years and I am already starting to think about what sort of visa I will need. I am wondering if I need one at all. I am sure I do, but my husband's does not think so. I am not even sure where to find this information out from as it is not a straight forward question.

Also, does a Writer's Visa exist in France and if so, where can I fnd out more information about it?

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Actually, you are entitled to live in France based on being the "conjoint" of an EU national. The details (in French) are here: Installer sa famille en France : citoyens de l'UE (hors Bulgarie et Roumanie), de l'EEE et Suisses - Service-public.fr

There isn't a "writer's visa" per se, but apparently you will have the right to work once you're settled in. As a writer, you'll probably wind up having to register with the "caisse" called AGESSA (AGESSA - Bienvenue sur le site web de l'Agessa) which is where you pay your social insurances based on your writing income.

As most of the relevant information is only available in French, how's your French? (Not trying to be a pain here - it really is necessary to be able to function in French if you're planning on moving here. No time like the present to start learning the language!)

My husband and I have basic French, but actually started formal lessons in September. We would never move to a country and not speak the language. Too many other things to worry about once you move.
