Car insurance for a good old banger

Having bought me a piece of France, the next cab off the rank is to buy a car and repeat my favourite drive, London to Paris to Malaga. Haven't done it for 20 years, but the plan used to be to buy a green card in London and press on. The cost from Lloyds was not a worry, but now I'll be leaving from Paris, third party insurance from my bank seems high.
So does anyone know a good company with a decent track record that I can talk to? The car I plan to buy is a '92 Ford Escort in good shape, and friends say I should find good trustworthy cover for around 25 euros a month.
