Default Buying a car in France

Have you ever bought a car in France? What is the process for buying a car in France? Do you have to be a citizen?

Hi!

You can certainly buy a car -

but what do you call " citizen "?

Do you mean " résident fiscal "? ( NB. now you can be that in different countries.

As " résident fiscal " you have the obligation to make an income tax declaration.

If that is not the case, then talk to the dealer, because there are then registration and insurance questions to be solved.

giantpanda

Hi!

Do not quite know, how this landed under " Buying a car in France ".

Are you aware, that if you work in France ( even over Internet - ine day is quuite sufficient to qualify ) you will have to register a business and pay Social Security charges ( Ursaaf)?

Yours,

giantpanda

Hi!

Basically yes., if you have all the papers ready ( proof of your address ).

But it will take probably take 2 days.

How do you intend to pay?

If you buy a new car from a dealer, there are temporary plates - and most dealers will arrange for the permanent plates. Otherwise, you take your carte grise (registration) to a shop where they can make the plates for you. But wherever you buy a car in the EU, you register it in the country in which you have residence. (And pay VAT based on your residence, too.)

If you're not resident in France, or only temporarily resident, you may want to look into the special registration that gets you out of paying VAT on your purchase of a car. The plates then carry an indication of their validity dates, and basically you have to get the car out of the country by the date the plates expire. Not sure if that's useful in your case, but just in case.
Cheers,
Bev

Default buying a vehicle in france

Hi,
Can you help me.
We are moving to France next year. Initially we will purchase a motorhome so that we can spend some time living/researching the area we want to live, the Dordogne at the moment.
Rather than go through the hassles of buying a LHD vehicle in the Uk and then registering it in France, I want to buy in France, but need to bring it back to the UK until we leave for France.
I can keep a vehicle here for 6 months, without registering it.
I have seen a vehicle that I would like to buy, but have a few reservations:

Can I get a vehicle data and vehicle check, if so who does it (we have AA & RAC)

If I am bringing the vehicle back to the uK, what do I have to do in terms of changing the ownership etc.

Is there anything else that I should be aware of.
thanks
terry sherar

Idon't know the specifics about France, but normally, unless you have an address in France where your car can be registered (proper address, not a correspondence address or PO Box etc), you can only register a car temporarily for export, for which you get customs plates (used to be red for France). You have to take it out of France within a short period (usually 10 days or so), and then on bringing it to UK, you have to register it here, using the forms supplied by the dealer, MOT it (if applicable) and tax it. You will have to change headlights beam aim and the speedo to mph.
I know you want to get French registration and use it over here until you move permanently to France, but I don't think you can do it legally. I think the French require you to submit your residence permit, utility bills or rental contract to show you have a home there when you try to register a vehicle.
