Cool Lyon for students?

Hey, i just moved to Lyon for school, and am in desperate need of some anglophone companionship! Where are all of the students around here? I've gotta shake this depression somehow!

I don't have any answers but I sympathise with the challenge of making friends in Lyon!

I don't know where the younger crowd is - I can't even find the 30ish group. AVF is great but mostly older. An fellow Canadian told me that lots of English-speakers hang out at the Irish pub in the 2nd - it is near a bridge on the Rhone side but I can't remember the name just now. Sorry!

What school are you attending?

Good luck, S

Try the smoking dog in Lyon (rue Lainerie). Maybe I'll see you there.

Mathieu (... not 100% anglophone but that may be suffcient ;-)

kyle, hopefully this reply finds you with friends in lyon by now. I am american, just moved to lyon, and am taking french language lessons at the alliance francaise, which seems full of young people, from 18-30. And regardless of where they are from, they all speak english. So maybe you can visit, or see if they offer activities to general students in Lyon, where you can meet people. Bonne chance!

hi rollerbahn,

May I ask what led you to choose Alliance Francais over the other programs? I've checked out AF website and will visit in person next week. But I'd love to hear how your experience there has been.

Merci beaucoup,
Ngan

ngan,
bienvenue à lyon. l'alliance francaise was the one program to accept me without a visa to study. they are also quite established around the world, although the lessons are a little expensive, and sometimes slow. i did not look at other programs, so i do not know how it compares to others in lyon, but i would like more conversation in the classes, and depending on the course, there can be a lot of students in each class. I think on a scale of 1-10, it rates about a 6 or 7, if that helps, in regards to the the quality of professor and lesson. for meeting fellow students, its probably a 9, there are a lot of nice people, all the time. i will look for other programs probably next month, however, now that i have a basic skill, after 2 mois. hope that helps!

Rollerbahn,

Congrats on having your basic French down. Let me know how your search for a new school goes! Aside from the classes, are you learning French on your own, i.e. with audio lessons or personal language exchanges?

Best,
Ngan
