I'd just like to say Hi to the forum. I've been coming to Italy for almost 10 yrs and in July this year, i finally moved to Italy and now reside just outside Bologna in a little town called San Giovanni in Persiceto, with my beautiful Italian fiancee Lorena. We have our own company working as artists. Of course I miss the UK but at least its only a couple of hours away by plane :)
Anyway, are there any other local English speaking members in this area?

Ciao

HI All,
We have finally set a date and booked tickets.
If there is anyone in Tuscany (Florence, Pisa, Lucca)or Abruzzo(a busy town) that can help us out with accomodation this is what we will be needing.
First of all: if anyone needs or knows of anyone in these areas looking for a housesitter please let me know, this will help us greatly.Space for 4 at least 1 bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room. (1 year contract only) even better if we can sign a 3 month contract first, I know this is near impossible.Fully furnished (we are only bringing the essentials with us, no furniture, kitchen appliances etc...)Close to public schoolsA town big enough to have work for a TEFL teacherWork for my husband: he has an environmental scientist degree, horticulture, garden care, lawn mowing, fruit markets etc... He does not mind hard work and getting his hands dirty.Italian tutors.
It will be great to finally get there and get started with a new experience.

Hi I have just discovered this website and I think its a brilliant idea. I have decided to leave the country and move to Italy as I have always loved the country. However I don't know that much about the areas and the cost of living there. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on fairly cheap areas near to or in Milan. I will be moving there alone and will have barely just turned 18 when I do, so I won't be looking for anything glamorous :).
Thank you

I've been debating back and forth on whether a tight knit expat community is really needed in Italy. I'm not at all involved in the huge community...

I've been debating back and forth on whether a tight knit expat community is really needed in Italy. I'm not at all involved in the huge community here in Florence. I probably only have one or two American friends here and although I sometimes get invited to various parties and get togethers I've never invested any time into befriending expats. One because they come and go so frequently and two because I live In Italy and I think it's better to invest my time in making Italian friends who help me to improve my language, more profoundly understand the culture and integrate into the community.

I think I am also always afraid of becoming what I call an expat groupie, a person who does everything to recreate their country of origin here in Italy. They barely speak Italian, they don't have any Italian friends, they hover around the military base or the international school and expat mommy groups that meet every week, Mexican or Hamburger dinners and Irish pubs.

Lately though since I started my own blog (movingtoflorence) and have been using forums such as this one to get the word out I've found that there is an element of the expat community that I've been missing out on, the networking and shared experiences.

My question is... what's the right balance and how did you find it. It can't be either my extreme shunning of everything and everyone American or the other that bothers me so much of completely recreating your country of origin.

Hey everyone,

Me and my current roommate are both form the US and we are planning on moving to Florence to teach ESL. We have done a fair share of research and realized that working in the EU is not going to be easy but we are determined. We were informed that Florence is a great place to work, as well as truely gain the italian experience. Does anyone have any suggestions on schools that are hiring ESL teachers?
Also, what are your recommendations on places to live within Florence? Any websites that would help would be great.

Thanks for the help!

Hello to Everybody,

I am Maria from Asia and a student of Art. I am 26 yrs old lady. I want to visit Italy sometime but before that I want to make friends and know about the country and culture in more details. I will be very happy to meet Italian People/Friends and learn some Italian. I have heard Italian Pasta and Pizza are amazing, I wish I visit Italy sometime and have a pleasure of Italian delicious food there. I would be grateful if somebody could help me to teach me more about Italy. I loved Burano island specially those colorful houses and small streets, those flower baskets/ vases on windows.

I hope, I could find few friends through this forum.

My husband and I would like to retire to Italy from the U.S., but the bureaucracy around the elective residency visa seems overwhelming. We have done lots of research but are boggled by the requirement that we have to rent or buy (don't want to buy) a place in Italy before we apply for the visa. It also sounds like Italian property owners are reluctant to agree to a long-term rental contract. It's our understanding that this would put us in the same legal category as a permanent Italian resident, which limits their control of the property. We're also not rich so we don't want to pay rent for months while our visa is under consideration. Can anyone tell us how you dealt with these issues? Thank you!

Hi -- I am from New York City and will be living in Bologna for the next 8 months (I am a graduate student). I'm slightly older than most of the students in my graduate program (I'm in my early 30's and most of them are in their mid-20's), so I feel a little out of place. Sometimes I wish I had slightly older (and maybe non-student) ex-pat friends to hang out with, have drinks with, go shopping, etc. If there are any other ex-pats in Bologna in similar circumstances please get in touch with me and maybe we can meet up and do something fun. I hate to think I will have to hang out with 25-year old Americans for the next 8 months! :)

By the way, I'm female, although for my purposes it probably doesn't matter.
