Allrite, here we go. First off thanks very much for this informative site. Ive found some good info but would like some personal answers.

I will be exiting the Marine Corps and am seriosuly considering moving to the Bangkok area. Once i leave the Marine Corps i have whats called the Post 9/11 GI Bill, i will get paid to go to school. How this comes to play in Thailand: If there is a sister college in Thailand of a school from the USA i will get 2000$ a month while in school, now if the school is just a Thailand school, i will recieve 1333$ a month. I think these are decent figures to live off of from what ive read, not including i could get a job. Reasonable Idea?

Reason for doing this:
Growing up in America we are spoiled wit so many luxuries that are completely unessecary, i do enjoy some but i would love to expirience a different part of the world and think it ould be amazing to go to school there. I just want to do something with my life instead of being like everyone else who takes everything for granted.

Housing:
If I actually go through with this i will have a Marine friend with me and obviously we would like to get a 2bedroom place, as long as its decently nice we wont complain, what can we expect to pay? Location im looking for is anything thats close to the schools or in a taxi ride away. I considered renting a room with others that are already established there, seems like i could get a nicer place that way. I am not sent on Bangkok but i feel thats where the most oppurtunity is. Pattaya would be nice if theres school in the areas.

Job:
This is a tough one. Havent noticed to many jobs but i also dont really know where to look other than craigslist. Now is teaching english a good idea or even possible, im in the process of learning Thai but i dont know how well i will be at it. what do you think would be a good monthly income to pull in to make living decent. I plan on bringing enough cash to at least pay 6months of rent up front and then some more for other expenses. If anyone has some contacts or info for me it would much be appreciated it.

Right now thats all i can think of but im sure im missing quite a bit. Please feel free to give me any advice or tips, leads on jobs, etc...but please do not come in here and post "dont do it, you will regret it", i dont need you to make the decision, ive already done that now im just looking into it more. looking forward to hearing some advice and any personal expiriences that may help in my future adventure.

I'm moving to Koh Samui in January and I need some fresh ideas as to how to go about job searching.

I am recently certified as a childrens yoga instructor (ages toddler through teen)... I'd love to be able to do this in Thailand - Where are some good places to apply? Do children speak English? (I intend to learn Thai, but it may take some time)

I'm also a Reiki Master, Raw food chef, and nutritionist. Anything in these fields in Koh Samui?

Any help, links, connections, or ideas would be so appreciated :-)

Many thanks and blessings!!

I thought I would bring up a vexing problem that bedevils tourists visiting Thailand.

Many Americans [and others] visit Thailand. In the process, they convert their home currency into Thai Baht. That's the easy part. The hard part is to try to re-convert Thai baht BACK into your home currency when you find you've too much and are ready to head back home.

This was a problem in Japan back in the 50's. You could buy Japanese Yen but when you were ready to depart The Land of the Rising Sun you couldn't convert it back to your home currency. You could spend it, keep it for a souvenir, give it away, burn it or do whatever you like - you just couldn't convert back to $US or any other currency. In short, you were screwed by the government.

I think [but don't know] if the same is true now in Thailand but it was VERY hard to make the conversion in the past. Anyone with current info they can share?

Dear all,

I'm going for a 12 mth marriage visa; In london now and moving to thailand with my wife who is a thai national and our daughter in the new year.

I've researched the visa position and although I previously did my wifes uk visa app myself (can deal with british bureaucracy) but for thai, I think this time I'll need an agent.

Can sort out the funds (either at bank or income) and the rest but merely/possibly require help with the 'bureaucracy - thai style' so can anyone suggest any worthwhile agents (given that we all know the scams and moreover the rubbish out there) I have found Siam Legal; are they what they claim they are and would my fee stop at what they quote????

Any advice about the above and generally would be welcome,

I wonder if a list of cheap places to eat in Chiang Mai and their location might be a benefit to those visiting this site. While many expats live in Chiang Mai a lot more don't - they may be planning a move or perhaps just tourists. If we could make it a 'sticky' site with a location map of Chiang Mai that would be fabulous.

There are a very few places I'm aware of. Galare Food Centre near the Night Bazaar west of Changklan Road is very good. It's a mini food court near a band shell with plenty of a tables and chairs. On occasion they would have evening dance demonstrations and concerts which is an added attraction. To eat at Galare Food Centre you buy and pay for your food in script. Whatever script you don't use can be exchanged. There is a variety of Indian, Muslim and Thai foods.

I'm sure there are other [cheap] places to graze in Chiang Mai - rather than frequenting the myriad often-overpriced restaurants. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

Serendipity2

A GREAT place to graze in Chiang Mai is the food court on the fifth floor at the Emporium on Sukhumvit Soi 24. The food in the Thai section is outstanding and cheap. There's a pretty reasonable sushi place called Uta Andon on the third floor as well.

My GF and I are thinking about going to visit Chiang Mai for a couple of days. This will be right after we get married (just a paperwork thing in Bkk), so it would be, I guess, our honeymoon.

Now, neither of us have ever been up north, and we have no extended family living up there. So we have no idea what to do once there.

So, you CM guys, wanna share some tips on nice, preferably romantic activities, resturants etc?
