Hi there,

Some of you may be able to help with these queries.

I'm currently trying to find out if it is possible to emigrate from the UK to Canada despite the fact that I won't be working there. I work in Saudi on a 2 on / 1 off basis so I would be out of the country for at least 8 months every year.
Would I be eligible for tax in Canada and if so how would it be assessed on overseas earnings? If not how would my childrens' schooling, family health-care, etc. be funded. Would I be allowed to buy a house in Canada?

I realise that this might be a little bit of a specialised subject, but any advice will be appreciated.

We have to apply for our two children to be citizens, we knew that they would be entitled to it but thought that we could do it once we were in Canada. I am British my husband a Canadian.
The problem is that we plan to go in April 2010 (5 months time) and have just found out that the process of citizenship currently takes between 12 and 15 months from the time it gets to Canada, back to the UK ect! The Canadian high commission here in the UK told us to send a letter with the application explain our intent to move our family there in 5 month stating that this may help speed the process. Is anyone familiar with this situation! anyone had experience with the process being faster because of you intend to move there soon, I would love to hear a yes but I feel doubtful, any advice would be much appreciated, can we move there while the application is being processed? Our children will be 2 and 4 when we move so they won’t yet be in school.

Hello there,

I wonder if you good people can help me please? Our very good friends (also looking to migrate to Canada) have heard that when you land to have your visa stamped, you have 90 days to take your driving test in order to gain a Canadian licence. Is this true? I don't doubt them but they were not too sure of this info themselves.

Thanks for your help.

Salary being offered is marginally more than UK salary - but we will be better off? Any thoughts/advice on local schools would be apperciated too. Is Kincardine a good place to stay, or are there nicer places nearby?

Any indicative relocation costs would be helpful - company are offering $30k, but not sure how far this will go.
Thanks:)

Forgive me if this has been answered previously...
I note there are both Federal & Provincial tax rates on CRA website... Do you pay BOTH of these on your income??? This seems like you would be paying a VERY high tax rate.
I thought Australians were taxed quite highly, but I've worked out how much tax you would pay on $50000 in BC (as an example) and Canada is substantially more (over $2000 extra in tax) if you are paying both.:(

I have been doing a lot of research, both my and my husband's job (college teacher & carpenter) are paid a LOT less in Canada if the advertised jobs are anything to go by. We don't have or really want a lavish lifestyle, however it does seem like it would so much more of a struggle.... I really love the country but I hope to be able to afford to get around and see some of it as well!

I will be coming from New Zealand to BC and was wondering how long do I have before I need to get a Canadian drivers licence?

I currently hold a full New Zealand licence (general motor vehicle) and may be staying in Canada for over a year. I went to the local transport authority here in New Zealand and she suspected my New Zealand licence may only be valid for up to a year in Canada but since it varies from country to country she could not give me a definitive answer. Can anyone help me out? thankyou.

I'm not sure if this is the right place so I apologize in advance if I've put this in the wrong category.

Hey, my name is Richard Williams. I'm a 24 year old Briton who has recently moved to Toronto on a 12 month working visa with BUNAC. Having been here a week and a half I'm finding it increasingly unedifying doing walk around resume drops as I'm finding Canadian employers excruciatingly slow getting in touch (I know its been a week and a half but I haven't had one single reply) and I don't like to nag people I've handed CV's into to see if they have looked at mine. I thought I'd give this a roll of the dice and see if there are any British expats hiring in the downtown area or any other Britons who have any job leads working in Toronto. I have experience in cafe's, bars, retail, night portering and waste disposal and I have an Ontario Smart Serve certificate.

Obviously I didn't come over expecting to fall into a job and I'm far from desperation right now but I felt it was time to get some feelers out into the wider community just to see what was out there.
