An interesting observation after looking at your photos. It seems the happiest people in your photos are of the "normal" Thais - even the poor hawkers. They may be poor but they are happy. The least happy? They seem to be the "working girls" or those who appear to be ladies of the night. That said, the happiest? Without a doubt - your Soi dogs. They are VERY fortunate, and well fed pooches.

Yes good ones KS. Pick out some individual photos for discussion here... I'll start the ball rolling...

This photo caught my attention... reminded me of last year, while the PAD demos were going on, my tuk-tuk driver telling me the following story...

The farang boss of local go-go bar 'The Spotlight' was allegedly seen on the premises of its main competitor in Chiang Mai, 'Foxy Lady', during these troubled times, when bed occupancy, at the start of high season, was well down. Presumably he was there to find out how well (or badly) it was doing in comparison. Rumour had it that his not-so-secret spying mission led to a severe 'dressing down' of his own girls later that same evening. It seems that some of his dancers were not as exotic as those he'd just been ogling chez Foxy, the theory being that his girls were suffering more from the inevitable consequences of a lack of exercise and too much junk food, the latter apparently accumulating in folds around the mid-section, and expanding bottoms. Perhaps their contortions on stage were simply not vigorous enough, who knows. Perhaps they were just not getting enough exercise away from work (although there are suggestions that this is at least partly the fault of their mostly aging male consorts).

Still, whatever the reason or reasons, times must be indeed be tough, for the go-go bar bosses to believe that they have to get their girls to go on a crash diet to attract the few single... unaccompanied anyway... male visitors to be seen in Chiang Mai. (I suppose if all else fails he could relaunch as a belly-dancing club?)

But my point is (ref the photo)... anyone else notice Thai girls are getting fatter?

I think it depends on a lot. Some people will see it as Santa and the college girl (pic above), some will be more open minded. Their minds will be swayed by how they recognise her and how you react together. In the above the guy is dressed like a tourist (white legs and shorts a dead giveaway) - and a poor one at that (whether he is or not is beside the point), they are holding hands in public, there is a big age gap, she is wearing very short pants. To most Thais she would be assumed to be a hooker and he a sex-tourist.

Show respect for your girl when you are in the street - i.e. walk side by side, but no kissing stroking hair (or face or other body parts) and hand holding is better left to private if it is likely to be misinterpreted. Try to ensure she dresses in an 'acceptable' way - I have a friend who is married to a Scotsman. They are a nice couple. The live in the UK. In the UK its fine for all the above, and she always dresses prettily and makes herself up - she has a clevage and shows it. In Thailand he dresses like a tourist (he is) and she wears the same low cut tops, hot paints etc. She has never been a hooker and they are perhaps 5 years apart in age - yet she has had many comments and much disdain in Thailand. Once they took a taxi and the driver tried to overchage them - the driver assumed she was a hooker and the farang could afford it - when she argued about the cost, he said as much and she was offended. The old saying goes - when in Rome.
Great reply, thanks. You have made it clear although somewhat dissapointing not to be able to even hold hands in public. It has recently been recognised in the medical world that physical contact is of great benifit and I will always wonder why this tradition of NO CONTACT IN PUBLIC still exist. Now that you have pointed out the differences betwwen the two in the pic I will do my best not to fall into this trap, I also believe that my lady will not allow me to.

I did, it was the first thing that struck me about the pic. I was thinking that these girls cannot be so poor as to become ladies of the night or if they are they are being well paid for thier work.

Did I tell you that I flew to Chiang Mai and saw an image of this monk with the wonderfully gentle face? You are a terrific photographer mate. I would love to be able to capture on film all the flying water and happy faces during Songkran.

Sorry about that last comment apparently out of place, I was referring to Froggies original photo of the monk, if it wasn't obvious.

Thanks Wit, there were 11,250 monks that morning at the 'tak bat' alms-giving ceremony on Nimmenhaemin in Chiang Mai... great experience.

And as for gentle Thai smiles, here's another one from that day...
