Unhappy Wow...what a dilemma!

Hi Guys,

I have been asked to attend the end of the world tomorrow 10/09/08. I have also been given the honour of throwing the switch to the Particle accelerator at Large Hadron Collider, which is the largest particle accelerator complex in the world.

My trouble is..... I over heard one of the scientist voicing his concerns that the Particle Accelerator I have been asked to switch on could in theory create a black hole that might eat up the whole of the planet!

Now.. obviously I would not want to be the one who is tarnished with the brush of Civilisation Killer, in the same way that I would'nt want to be held responsible for creating a race of mutants who live beneath the Franco-Swiss mountains.

So as you can see I am in very much of a predicament..... But my real problem is the fact that I have never been to an event like this before and am at a complete loss to what one should wear to such an occasion.

Love to hear peoples views on this.

Kind regards,

Ricardo Blue

HI Ricardo,

I can appreciate your predicament. I have not myself experienced anything of this magnitude so my advise is purely "academic" in nature.

1. You're really in a win-win here. You have to look at the positive side of all of this. Either you pull the switch, change physics as we know it, and get the Nobel Prize in 20 years (because for some reason it always takes that long), or you'll kill us all but we won't know because we'll all be dead anyway, so you don't have to worry about any irritating accusatory headlines in the New York Times tomorrow... Think about it: you can't lose.

2. mutant race: is that the same or different than the ones already ON the Franco-Swiss border? (JUST KIDDING EVERYONE!!! people get so touchy about these sorts of things)

3. What to wear? You have to consider your audience. Now this is a tough call because you actually have TWO audiences: the physicists with whom you will be working, and the rest of the world who will be watching this (if it all goes well, that is). Naturally, if you destroy the planet, it won't really matter what you are wearing -- refer to NYT comment from point 1. Assuming we all live through this, I think you should go with a nice suit but not TOO nice. You don't wanna go Prada or Gucci on a day like this because you'll embarrass the particle physicists who are for sure going to be wearing ripped jeans (and not the "cool" kind, but the kind that they bought without rips and have had so long they eventually tore apart at the seams) and probably holey T-shirts if my experience with academics is anything to go by. You want to be more formal than them, but not too much more. Definitely leave the tux at home!

Dolly
in front of a bunch of physicists who have been working underground for months and maybe haven't seen the light of day or anyone in heels for as long? Dolly, have you really thought this through?

(btw moderators: we need a "rolling on the floor laughing" smilie -- for Ric's posts if nothing else!)
