Welcome to the forum! I responded to your post up in the Mexico section, but I just thought of something else. If you will have ongoing medical care needs, are you concerned about being away from the VA hospital system? And you should consider access to medical care when you choose a place to live.

When you said medical, it raised a flag for me. Glad to hear it's not going to be a concern. Good luck with your explorations.

Any particular reason to choose Mexico? I know some expats living in Mexico and they like it well enough. I just moved to Cali, Colombia. I expect to live out my remaining years here.

The people are friendly. The climate is great. The food is good. Prices are very reasonable if you enlist the help of a local when shopping. For example, I rented a really crummy, tiny apartment from an expat here when I first arrived. Price? $500. Last week, I rented another apartment that any American of average income would love to live in and at a little less than $300 per month. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one with a Jacuzzi style tyb for 2), huge living/dining room, modern, updated kitchen, etc. I tell you this just to show how different things can be when working with an expat and a local.

I don't speak much Spanish and don't find many Colombians so far who speak much English.

Really, I think that's a benefit. I'm being forced to learn Spanish rapidly and I find the best way is to just do it.

Good luck with Mexico.
