Default Cost of living

This thread has contributions from regular posters.

I am Chris, single living in Cairo.
I am on an expat package and all my day to day basic living costs are found however I do visit the hairdressers, manicures regularly, I go to the cinema, meet friends for coffee, go to the opera so I will be posting the cost of my entertainment.

Can I add some to this? If not - please delete my post!

My name is Meghan. I have four kids under the age of four (and am married to an Egyptian). While I do not live a completely traditional "expat" life, we are currently searching for schools for the two oldest and trying to relocate to an area near the school we choose. I would be happy to post costs of schools (English speaking international and national private programs) and all materials related, plus the cost of travel to and from (versus cost of housing located nearby).

I hope to add the cost of night school as I intend to go to the Spanish Instituto.

I am Helen, 37 no kids but married to an Egyptian.

We live and work in Sharm el Sheikh, I work at one of the International Schools, but this is not an expat package.

We don't do a huge amount of socialising due to work hours, but we occasionally go out for meals or get takeaway.

We both smoke, and we are both learning languages at two different night schools.

Ok here is mine.

My name is R, I am an attached 34 year old living in Cairo, no kids.

I am not on an expat package but on what you could call an "inflated"egyptian package as I found a job insitu rather than from abroad. 70% of my income is from renting some property I have abroad.

I don't drink and don't smoke and I manage to put away decent money at the end of each month.
I go away for a weekend at least once a month ie. Luxor, Aswan and go out to eat and listen to music once or twice a week. I go for longer holidays twice a year once to the Far East and once to Europe. So travelling is where most of my expenses are.
I feel I am fincancially "comfortablish" and one of the perks is that my foreign income is not subject to tax anywhere.
I would like to purchase a property but not sure about doing this due to whats going on here but I resent making someone else rich via a rent.

Hi,
My name is Faima, married to an Egyptian, mother of a 7 yo girl. I can say we're living 100% "traiditioanal" egyptian life. I have small Internet business, my husband is working and the kid is going to a private school in Giza. Here are some of our living spendings:
- school per this year: 2400 EGP+ 125 EGP uniform+ 100 EGP school materials;
- gas per month: about 30 EGP (we're using now GAS cans, but before we had central gas, and the bill was about 10 pounds/ month;
- electricity- 40 EGP month (fridge, air conditioner, TV, laptop, espresso machine, lights);
-Internet: 125 EGP/ month
- food per month: approx. 1000 EGP. (Mostly I'm buying from "Al Alam" super market and local market.):
yoghurt: 18EGP/ 3kg
milk- 5,50 EGP/ 1kg
mince meat: 32 EGP/1 kg
red meat: 38 EGP/ 1 kg
cornflakes 24 EGP/ 1 kg
frech toast: 6 EGP/ 1 package
baladi or eish fino: 1 EGP per 5 pieces
domatoes: 3-4 EGP/ 1 kg
potatoes: 2-4 EGP/ 1 kg
- cigarettes -12 EGP/ red Marlboro
- beer- Stella 6 EGP/ 1
- wine- 45 EGP/ bottle of Omar Hayam white wine
I know these prices are way down regarding to prices in Zamalek or other expats areas, and that's why we are keeping here, in Giza.

No problem about where you buy as this is not a you could buy it cheaper at so and so thread... I believe doing it this way will give us a better understanding of the prices in Egypt.
