Emad,

I currently live in Dallas, TX and will be moving to Cairo by the end of May. I would love to get your thoughts on a couple of things if you don't mind. Can you email me so we can set up a time to discuss? if you are in Dallas, maybe we can meet in person.

Thanks,
Ramy

Hey Nonie, Maryann here not with any answers, but appreciate reading your responses. We are moving to cairo in November, and have tones of questions about schools, church, and the transition for our 8 & 10 yr olds (boys). Been looking at Cairo American College, and so far it seems to have what we would be looking for interms of academic challenge and sports. All the best in your move.

Regarding horses and trainers, there are some good trainers here but not anything really superb. Most of the sporting clubs have some stabling and offer a place for jumping or dressage, but no riding outside an arena. There are stables in the Giza Pyramids area that should be avoided like the plague particularly if you are boarding your own horse here and don't have the language skills to argue. Most of the feeding is done totally differently than in the US and will be a big adaptation for the horse. It also is not the easiest thing in the world to arrange shipping and quarantines.

Most horsekeeping here is in boxes with limited turnout. Most feeding relies too much on grain rather than forage (hay here is not that easy to come by but it can be done if you know how and have control over the way your horse is fed...which you don't usually have in many boarding situations. There are options for riding and such. My personal recommendation would be to test the waters regarding riding and such. CAC has a very active extracurricular schedule with sports, drama, music and so on...kids get pretty busy and riding is a time-intensive activity. It might be easier to just go riding on a casual basis til the time management issues are sorted out. Also most of the riding is at least 40 minutes from Maadi across the river.

The kids will probably have a ball. It may take a little while to adjust but the expat community is very welcoming.

Maryanne

Our children have lived in a small midwestern town in the US their entire lives. Attend a small private Christian school. We are very excited about this new adventure we will be on...moving to Cairo. My questions are:

Has anyone moved their early teenage children from the US to Cairo...if so what was the experience, adjustment like for them?

Are there any private Christian schools in the expat community? If so, can someone supply me with those names?

As Americans moving to a Muslim country, are there any laws that we need to keep in mind...things we would not normally think of?

I'm assuming that the expat community is fairly tight knit. Are the kids welcoming? What do the kids do for fun in Cairo?

Lastly, my 13 year daughter (have a 13 year old son as well) is an equestrian. We're thinking about moving her horse over as well. We feel like this is a great chance for her to train under some amazing instructors. Does anyone know of any riding stables where riding lessons are given and horses or boarded?

Look forwarding to hearing from you!

Hi Noonie,

I knew that your name is Noonie after reading the whole posts, so Congartulation that you are moving in egypt, there are nothing to worry about here but one thing...the properties...have you decided yet what kind of properties you will get..and ofcourse that based on how much money do yo have...but the best place ever is NEW CAIRO..it is containing everything now..and there are a lotta properties there..with a differant schools (Amercans and british)...let know if you need any help..

There is a place called Agyad near 6th of october off Cairo-Alexandria desert road. You may want to check it out.
The most established riding club is E Gezeira club near zamalek.
We moved here from California, I enrolled my daughter in the Smart Village school. So far so good.
It will really depend on where do you live, if you gonna be in Maadi, then I recommend looking for a school in Maadi, the traffic is horrible and driving is extremely hazardous.

Good luck
