Default furnished Accommodation

Hi,

I am moving over in two weeks and will probably be seeking furnished accommodation for my wife and I. We have a 40inch lcd tv. is it worth bringing this over or is it better storing this? We have a sky box too. Should we bring this?

Depends how much it will cost to ship it over! If it is cheaper to get a new TV in Dubai, then you should just get a new one! If you can, just leave the TV with relatives or sell it! I'm sellling all my stuff in the UK, including a brand new TV! I'm not sure about the SKY box. Considering that it is a decoder, it might just work if you get a local TV card but don't quote me on that! Mine is staying in the UK!!!

Don't quote me on it but I don't even think you can get sky in the uae, apart from watching via some kind of internet connection on a computer which you would use your sky box for but I'd say it wouldn't be worth it because you'd be subject to internet speeds/buffering etc too much disruption to the service probably.

question on a similar topic.

how liquid is the market for 2nd hand furniture ?

do most people arrive (and depart) with their own stuff, or sell on to new arrivals?

Hi there, from the information I've found there are plenty of places to get second hand furniture in dubai. Easy place to start is the classified sections on dubizzle and the gulf news.

You are right. You can only get SKY in the UK & Northern Ireland! The box would only be useful if you can use it to get some of the local TV channels, otherwise as you have said, it will be pretty useless! I have actually cancelled my SKY service and I am giving the box to my other half! Not enough baggage allowance to drag it all the way to Dubai, only to find out that it doesn't work!

Very true! Expats come and go and you can always find second stuff for sale from expats who are leaving. As a matter of fact, I'm sure that I have seen a post on the forum about stuff for sale.

There are 100's of people who come and go each week.

Some arrive with nothing and buy once here, some prefer to leave with nothing, and sell before leaving.

To get cheap items people are selling check out dubizzle.com, and alos places such as notice boards in Spinneys and Choithrams, and also sites such a souk.com
