Default A hello and a couple quick questions

Hey all I'm a 19 (soon to be 20) year old whos just been given the opportunity to live and work over in Dubai. I'm an Australian living in Brisbane but I grew up mostly in Hong Kong to Aussie expat parents but I'm not too sure at all what Dubai would be like.

The job I've been offered is in the security industry and from what I've heard Dubai is pretty safe. My package includes accomodation (not an allowance they designate it) and fairly good money. For a young person for myself would it be easy to meet people seeing as I'm going alone and what is the nightlife like? Is Dubai a place where I will always be able to find something to keep myself interested?

Replies would be very much appreciated!

Hello

Take some time to read through threads & you'll find a lot of answers.

Generally Dubai is very safe. Bear in mind that the minumum age to drink alcohol is 21 and many clubs have a door policy of over 23/25. There is a lot to do here.

Let me know if you want guidance regarding salary package, although you will find info here regarding cost of living.

hey,

If they are providing you with accommodation and not financial compensation for it instead- then that’s good because accommodation can be expensive here in Dubai. Also find out where exactly your work is located and where your accommodation will be- sometimes companies provide you with accommodation in Sharjah or Ajman while your work is in Dubai- so you’ll have some commuting to do.

There are plenty of things to do here in Dubai. There are lots of nightclubs and Bars. You said you were turning 20. The legal age for drinking and getting admittance into nightclubs is 21- But if you look older they won’t ask you for an i.d. – a lot of kids get fake id’s or are friends with the bouncer etc. So there are many ways to get in.

Dubai has numerous malls where you can shop, dine and Ski. It also has many clubs where you can meet people who share your similar interests like: the rugby club, sky diving, cycling, surfing, reading etc.

My Australian colleague tells me there is also an “Australian-New Zealand Association” - just google ‘ANZA Dubai’- their website has a lot of information on the UAE. They also hold activities and provide support for the Australian and New Zealand community living here. You can contact them through email.

I shifted to Dubai while I was in school so I made friends pretty quickly. The people are generally very friendly (but there are those who aren’t). Crime rates are low but have been increasing steadily because of the increase in population (Dubai gets an estimated 300 immigrants a day). My colleagues at work are pretty cool too but they are much older than me.

I think Dubai can be fun if you find the right sort of company. It’s always exciting because there is always something new to look forward to.

Cheers
