Default Working in Dubai in May

My partner and I are going to work in Dubai in May, he has a position secured and I have been told by the same company that once there they will find me something to do, if I am happy he won't be going home to a bored nagging wife and all that. While I am happy to work I dont want to work in the same building as him. He will have a car but how is the transport situation for me? is there some form reliable bus service or such to enable me to get to and from work?
Thanks in advance.

Its not like London transport here, i find the public buses not very good, and when they are here they are packed. Taxi's are on option but waiting for them in rush hour is very bad.

The metro will be completed in late 2009 or 2010 (correct me if im wrong)

The public bus system is not something most women would be comfortable with. That leaves you w/ taxis. Where you live and where you work will significantly affect how convenient these are. 2nd hand cars are cheap and cheerful, though. You can get a Polo for a good price, and I think you'll find that in the long run it's more economical and time-friendly than taxis.

By all means you should have a car. Taxis for when you go out in the evenings, or to the expat functions, definitely.

When driving act like you own the road and you'll be fine, most of the taxis do. Don't become rattled by the horns honking, just go where you need to go and if that means you are driving in the dirt to pass a single car, well that will be up to you.

My own little advice is to relax when driving, as you save no time trying to get past another car. Tune the radio to 99.3 Radio 2 and sing along. I'm a rock star in my vehicle.

Please don't drive under 120 in the left lane. Cheers.

Lol loved your advice ref driving here, Iron! But I thought I was the only Rock Star here? I normally tune into Radio itouch and the car gently rocks to the heavy beat of Rammstein!!

I'm sometimes beeped here, I've so far managed to refrain showing the birdie! Lol

I'm sure there are many rock stars in their vehicles Pasanada, can't say I sing much in German at least until I pick up another Borussia Monchengladbach disk when they get promoted. I think I compete with Bono from U2 for rock legend status in my vehicle.

Ohh greeny, as marc mentioned the metro should be running in Dubai next year sometime, which should make for nice transportation along Sheik Zayed Road and provide views not seen from driving a car. I'll have my camera snapping a few for sure.
