It happens every year on the last Saturday of March and it's a global initiative. Read about it here http://www.earthhour.org. It is, of course, a voluntary initiative.
Last year they shut the internet down in the hotel I was staying in that night as the routers were on the same circuit as the lighting in the corridors, and they were relying on the battery backup lighting.
I can't stand the self-congratulatory PR nonsense that goes along with it, oh look at us, we've shut down our external lighting for a whole hour, we really care about the planet and the environment. 5 minutes later, come along on Friday for our obscene Friday Brunch where we will finish the day by throwing out AED 50k worth of food.

Gav, I know what you mean but I just ignore it. I'm dubious about all the PR and blah about recycling here, but there's this part of me that hopes just doing something small like this goes some way to making a difference.
