Default Laptop Problem

Hi , my Laptop is in need of some maintenance, black screen, crashing etc. Can anyone recommend anyone or anywhere that can help sort it out without costing a packet?

When you say black screen, do you mean it's a hardware issue... or that the screen is staying lit but you're getting software errors?

If it's all software related, it could just be a simple format of the HDD and you could be sorted.

As Scotman mentioned, it depends on how much you value what is on the laptop as to what route to go down.

If it's software related, reformat using the recovery disks. If you don't have recovery disks, you could install a version of Linux fairly easily. If you don't want to do that, and can still access quite abit of your laptop, just doing a system restor back a few months to when it was working fine could do the trick.

Unless you really do need everything on there, and nothing is backed up, and you can't even turn it on - I would suggest looking for a new one, plenty of bargains to be had

Thanks, there is nothing on it that I need so I could use the recovery disc but I think the problem must be a very simple one for anyone who knows about pc`s which rules me out. I can use it and access all the programs using cont/alt/delete and opening the Task Manager but on start up the desktop doesn`t appear and the screen is black with just the cursor showing.
It mat be something that I have done myself as I was deleting stuff on the start up menu to help the performance.

There is a PC/Mobile Phone Repair Walk-in Repair shop n the back of
COMPU_ME in Mall of Emirates. First floor next to to Borders Shop and the Cinema's.
The guys there are good, most of the time speedy and reasonably priced.

Good luck
L.

Definitely sounds like an OS error. Possibly something is corrupt in the boot registry.

Do you have the Windows disc for your version of Windows as opposed to a manufacturer recovery disc?

If so, you could try to repair windows

Thankyou for all the replies, I have just sorted it. I realised it was something I`d done so I started it in safe mode and opened the help filed and found the system restore point and reset the pc to the day before I tried to mess with it.
The Lesson, never mess with something that I know sweet fa about !! Cheers!!

Agreed!!
Even better - get a Netbook. They're great, pretty small and yet do everything you need/want them to do. Because of their size you can slip them in a small bag, along with an extrenal HDD for your photos or extra programs or whatever, arrive at a mall and just use the WiFi. Battery life is usually pretty good on them too.
