Default Working in Dubai

Hi i have just set up my account with this site.

I am looking to move with my family to Dubai or U A E in the next few months,

This depends upon me getting a job in the construction industry, as a Contracts Manager which i have been doing in London for the past 15 years.

My field of expertise is Shopfitting, Hotels and the leisure industry.

Is there any call for this out there or is it doom & gloom as it is here in London?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks Barry.::

Hi,
I am not in construction myself...but have heard no good things for a couple of months now. I am sure MAZ and others will be able to comment more specifically....but basically I would think to stay put for a couple of months and then decide is advisable. Especially when you have a job at the moment.....

Construction is most definitely one of the most badly hit areas here oo.

Good luck in whatever you decide
Lenochka

Totally agree with Lenochka,

If you have a secure job in the UK, I would stay put until things pick up world wide.
The UAE has been hit with the credit crunch, just as much as other countries.

The worst hit areas have been construction and real estate, though I'm sure there aren't many industries who haven't been touched in some way.

do a search here at the forum (construction industry, recession, etc) and you will find lots of info about the current economic climate here. but in general is not good. there have been many threads covering this topic. i wouldn't recommend you to move right now at all. people losing their jobs all over the place. construction is BADLY affected. Is actually very sad

I'm in construction and wouldn't advise anyone jacking in a job in the UK or anywhere else at the moment to come out here.

I got given a redundancy notice in November, but luckily carried on working for the next 10 weeks while trying to sort another job out. Finally got one, but it does mean driving to Abu Dhabi everyday, but small price to pay in reality

Following on from the other comments:

I am in the construction industry in Dubai and things are tight. Projects are been placed on hold or cancelled.
The firm I work for is tendering for one project which has 28 different companies bidding for it. And we just lay pipes!!

If you want to move out here get yourself employed by a company who will move you out here.
They will then sponser you and do all the relevant formal paperwork, visa, labour card, ID card etc....

Barry,

You're probably in a better position than most to get a job out here given the amount of experience you have, but I wouldn't give up anything in the UK before you have a concrete job offer and your visa approved. I guy I used to work with in the UK got offered a job over here so he left the company thinking everything would be fairly straight forward. His visa was declined on first application, but he eventually made it over here at the end of Jan, 4 months after leaving his previous job.

Make sure you do plenty of homework before you come over as most construction is now taking place in Abu Dhabi as thats the emirate with all the money. The problem with AD is that the accommodation is really expensive, and the prices aren't coming down like they are in Dubai. You're talking at least £2000 a month to rent a 1 bed in Abu Dhabi.

I was working as a Site Agent in the UK, but with only 4 years under my belt, the companies over here aren't interested. I've been over here with my husband since the end of September looking for a job, but I've just about given up with construction and I'm now just looking for anything.

Also been here since September, and am still looking for work. I am in HR and Training. Most companies have a HR department but no one is even recruiting for these kind of roles. Consider carefully before giving everything up in the UK. the grass isn't always greener!
