Angry waiting period to hire a rental car on a new license?

Dear all,

Hope you're all having a good day.

Cos I am not

I had just decided to finally start doing my driving lessons so I can get a drivers license and finally hire a rental car, when one of my colleagues told me that you can not hire a rental car if you are on a new drivers license, and I will need to wait SIX BLOODY MONTHS?? He meant well but of course I wanted to kill him, not his fault really, he's just the bearer of the bad news...

Anyone can comment on this? Has anyone has had this experience?

Because if that is the case I think I might just give up driving in the UAE since they make it so bloody difficult

Thanks in advance for your comments

Izzy

I've had my UAE license for only a bit over 4 months now and hired a car last week. I think they would be more concerned over your age?

Bubbles Dizzy is going to love you for that

I hired a car on my UAE licence pretty much the day after I got it. I did also give them a copy of my Bermuda licence as well. They didn't ask for ti but I just figuered it wouldnt' hurt. I don't know if it helped or not but I didn't have any problems.

Really? I thought she'd be older

And don't you have to be like 21 or something to rent a car here? Moreover if you have a UAE residency you cannot drive unless you have a UAE driving license... but here's a question Izzy;

Don't you have valid license from your native country? If so, why don't you transfer it over?

yay! great to know my elizabeth arden stuff is working ... lol... thanks bubbles !!

ok i thought it was a load of bollocks what they told me I'd have to wait the six months, but rules in Dubai can be so absurd, that you never know.

Alright, I shall continue my arrangements then. If I'm lucky I may have a drivers license by the end of this year.

thanks guys!!!

I think it is correct,

One of my collegues is Mauritian and had to take lessons. He couldn't hire a car until his new dubai licence was six months old. Something to do with you not being insured. Some hire companies are more diligent than others when checking the licences.

He bought a car instead which is apparently ok.

Last year i was 22yrs old and i rented a car for a week. I had booked the car on line (Thrifty). They asked me for driving liecense (3yr+) and any original ID (Passport). Within a week i got a parking ticket for Dh150 and i paid Dh175 to them as it is not my car.

Next week i again wanted the car they advised me to take Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Dh25- Dh30 per day apart from the charges and i took that. With in a day i bumped into another car. Not much of a damage either side but a scratch on my car for which i had to wait in police station for 2hrs to get that police report apart from waiting for 1hr on the road.

I am not a bad driver but i was reallly tense at that time due to some family issues.

Most car rental will not rental a car for someone have new license. Because the insurance company will not fix the car if someone, involve an accident with new license. And for that car rental will not take risk to rent, the car for someone has new license. And if some rental car did rent car for someone with new license make sure you read the contract. Because some contract will state if you involve in accident and it is your fault, you will pay the cost of fixing the car and will pay the rent of the car and until the car out from the garage. Be careful of car rental contract, read it will.
