Your passport should never be held by your employer- it is illegal

BUT- they will take the passport from you to finalize your residency- and then it should be given back to you.

It's actually illegal to do that now, but employers still do as they get the employees to sign an agreement. It also only really happens in the lower job grades. Don't worry.

Car rental places will also want to hold on to your passport for the duration that you rent a car.

They shouldn't hold on to it either!

Mind you, I can see why they would try to if someone doesn't have a credit card. Too many people have either absconded or just abandoned a car in the past. Credit card as a method of payment allows them to chase the credit card compny for outstanding payments.

I only just recently got a credit card as I've always considered them to be evil. So before I had to leave my Passport at the car rental place. I found the majority of the rental places in Naif hold onto them.
