Default British Expat: Legal Advice for crime in the UK

I am a British expat in Dubai. Recently I have found out that there is a court case against me in the UK because someone I know forged my signature on an a contract that led to an unpaid debt of about 3000 Pounds.

Where can I get legal advice on what to do in this case? I have written to the court in the UK but I do not know how to go about putting a case against the person who forged my signature. Would the British embassy be able to help?

Thanks

The British consultate in Dubai is about as much help as a chocolate teapot.

To take someone to court in the UK, you generally need to engage a solicitor, especially as you are so far away.

You have 2 separate issues, 1 is the active case against you, the 2nd is the case you want to take against them. Did the forgery take place when you were out in Dubai? You should lodge a criminal complaint against them by going to the police and raising a case of fraud with them. If you want to pm me I can give you more details

The only good thing about the British consulate is you can buy poppies for remembrance Sunday! That’s about it!

Embassies do not provide attorney services. Don't seek for any help in Dubai, as the majority would be highly ignorant about the British law. I recommend that you take a short trip home and hire an attorney to deal with this for you. In the U.S. you have your attorney fees reimbursed by the non-prevailing party if you win the case. I believe, you guys, would have the same kind of situation in the UK, so if you genuinely did not enter into the contract, you have a good chance of coming out of this without big financial losses. However, I do not see the point of suing the fraudster, since you can just declare the contract void and your pseudo-obligations would fall.
