Smile Help and advice needed about a move

I am currently looking intoa move over to Dubai i have obviously done a great deal of research on the internet as well as geeting quite alot of information from the recruitment firms i am working with, how ever i would like some advice from guys and gals with experience.

I work in media sales and am currently intviewing for a position with IPT publishing and the salary is around 14000pcm basic which i think is around £2000 would this be enough for me to have a comfertable lifestyle? decent accom? money in my pocket?

Also what would social life be like for me as i am 25 and single?
What are the sports facilities and options like?
What is the web like? are many sites restricted? poker sites?
Golf?
Holidays from employment?
what is it like during eid and ramadan?

Thanks Guys and Gals...

If you have to pay accomodation and transport out of this some, sorry, nowhere near enough. If accomodation is paid for, then it could be doable, but factor in a car etc and there won't be a huge amount left

Also what would social life be like for me as i am 25 and single? You will be sorted
What are the sports facilities and options like? Plenty of sports clubs, gyms etc....most sports are available
What is the web like? are many sites restricted? poker sites? General browsing is fine. No gambling, porn, some p2p sites are blocked etc
Golf? Plenty of courses, but fairly pricey
Holidays from employment? Usual is 30 days with a paid return flight
what is it like during eid and ramadan? Eid is party time, during Ramadan no smoking, eating or drinking in public (that includes in your car) between sunrise and sunset. Places will serve alcohol after 7pm but no music

Thanks Guys and Gals...
Hope this helps

Wow, seriously? Thought that wasn't bad money so what sort of level do i need to be looking at? how much is accom and transport the figures i've looked at on some sites suggest that i'd have enough but they may be out dated..

Accomodation is shockingly pricey.

You didn't say where you will be working, but at I guess, I would say Media City. Depending on how far you would be prepared to travel each day to and from work, your choice of area to rent in is vast. If you didn't want to travel far, a 1 bed in the Marina would be in the region of AED120k, bit further Discovery Garden AED90K, further still International City studio AED65K. bear in mind, all these rents are paid a year in advance (usually you can get a loan from the company), plus deposit plus 5% real estate agent fees. These figures are a guide only, please don't take them as gospel.

For transport, there are really only 2 options. Taxi, which are ok, but will soon eat into your cash and can be unreliable sometimes, or a car. For a car, either lease one for maybe AED2k per month, or buy one, then factor in insurance, maintenance etc

Thanks Orgi, thought it was all a little too good to be true, seemed a real good prospect.
:-(

What are the opp's for accom share to reduce cost maybe as it seems i wouldn't be able to afford on that wage. It is only a basic salary so i will be able to earn commission but dont want to rely on that for pressures sake.

I really want to come over, what is the standard at international city?

By the letter of the law, flat sharing is seen as sub-letting and that is illegal, but that said, there are still plenty of adverts on Dubizzle and in the Gulf News for it, and without a doubt, it will certainly keep the costs down.

I only stayed at IC for 4 weeks, but there are others on here who have been there longer. There is a thread titled "International City", it may be worth your while having a read through there.

Just to give another point of view, I think that you could, as a single bloke, easily live on 14k per month. There are plenty of flat-shares every day in the 3-6k bracket on dubizzle. It's all about being realistic when you choose the main expense - your rent. If you live further out you will get a bigger room. Equate Dubai Marina to being Canary Wharf, would you live there in the UK or would you live further out and commute?

A factor you also need to think about is your commitments back in the UK. I still have a mortgage so had to factor that in unrented just in case worst came to the worst.

Transport is fairly cheap here and if you get a second hand motor then it's no way going to break the bank. Petrol here is REALLY cheap. Food isn't that expensive if you cook yourself and don't eat out all the time. Beer is parallel to London prices (if not a little bit more in some places).

I'd come over here for a couple of years for 14k at your age deffo. You may never get the opportunity again.

Good luck whatever you do.

Nice one fella just check out that website and seems there is some cheaper places to rent and it does seem doable, just worried a little about the quality of life i could afford say if i earn no commisiion and just have 14k i do have standards so would prob need 5-7k for rent out of the 7k remaining what would i need to pay for and what could i do? nights out? eating out? golf? tennis? flicks?

I have standards to my man

Things you need to pay for (if not included in the rent)

Rent
DEWA (Utilities) 800AED per month-ish
Internet - check DU/Etisalat websites
Car - variable
Insurance (percentage of the value of the car)

Not sure on the prices of all those as they are all included in my rent and I live very near a taxi route so use them instead of using a car.

Don't know the prices of Golf or Tennis either but I'm sure someone on here can elaborate.

Nights out - think London prices.

In fact, think living in the SE of England for the costs of everything less petrol which is REALLY cheap.

I would work out your disposable income in the UK after all the above mandatory expenses and then do it for here. If the figures add up then make the move. Remember the value of a move here is not just a monetary one, it's the complete experience. Plus if the figures are close it'll just mean the you'll have to work for your money and earn more commission
