Default Advice please

Hi there, total newbie alert!
My partner and I currently live in the UK but are becoming ever more fed up with the current conditions. We are both 24 and don't see any hope of getting onto the property ladder for many years to come. Both of us are in full time retail management so are not afraid of working.
My parents own an apartment in Paphos (they still live in the UK) and would have no problem letting us live there either temporarily or permanently.
Has anyone got any advice on employment in Cyprus? All we have is our past 6 years experience, unfortunately no official qualifications as such. I am considering learning Greek, would this help employment prospects?
Any advice gratefully appreciated

Hi there and welcome to the forum!

According to recent reports, Cyprus has the third lowest unemployment rate i Europe so your chances here are as good as anywhere else. Learning Greek would be a definite plus but, although mainland Greek is understood, you should be aware that Cypriots speak a dialect. If you can find a Cypriot to teach you then all the better.

Qualifications don't seem to be a major issue. You say you are in retail management, what do you do?

Babs

Smile Advice

Hi Babs, thanks for your reply.
My partner and I run and manage a petrol station here in the UK. Things are just getting crazy here. This winter many people will have to make the decision between heating and eating, which is downright wrong. I know that the current credit crisis is global but with practically the highest form of taxation added on top, I honestly do not believe that the UK can sustain itself for much longer.
Sorry rant over.
Employment wise, I can pretty much turn my hand to anything (within reason of course!) like waitressing, hotel work etc, my partner is mainly into electronics, computers etc.
With bills that need paying we would need to clear about 1000-1200 euros in total per month. Is this a realistic goal? Or pie in the sky?!

I know what you mean about the UK. Its one of the reasons why we left *:-)

If you are looking at bar work or similar then 1000-1200 Euros per month clear might be pushing it. A friend is earning 600 Euros per month in Protaras (plus tips). If that is a combined wage then I think it is attainable. I was looking around Larnaca today and quite a few restaurants and bars are looking for staff. I am sure it must be the same in Paphos.

Computers are nowhere near as widely used as in the UK. I couldn't say what jobs might be possible or at what wage... hopefully someone else can help.

Hi Ly (gee that rhymes)

Try this agency number in Nicosia - speak to them direct and they will explain the IT job situation here - 00357 22769369.
