Default Try It and See???

Hello All.

I am thinking of retiring to Cyprus in the next couple of years - but having read a few comments about "it's harder for women than for men to adjust" and how there are no Tescos, etc, and as I am an older single female, perhaps I should spend some time living there first. I know you can not earn if you move there when you are retired, but would earning from writing also be banned?

How easy is it to rent an apartment (nice but not palatial!) near Paphos? I say Paphos as that seems to be the most happening place.

Also - I'm starting to worry - is there any kind of retirement life there for active minded people??

Hi Catperson,

We are also going to retire to Cyprus, I think that it depends what type of person you are to decide if it's going to be harder for women than for men. You are not allowed to earn if you are retired and that gives you some advantages and disadvantages. I guess if you are writing for the Cypriot market then you may be in contravention of the regulations however, if your income is not paid into a Cyprus bank account you could be okay.

In Paphos there are a couple of large supermarkets, they aren't Tesco's but they are the local equivalent and one of them is Carrefour which used to have a store in the UK.

It is really easy to rent an apartment, I think the best way to do it is probably to book a weeks holiday along with a hire car, use the time to identify the area that you want to live in, if you are fairly close to the time you are going to retire then you could look for the specific apartment. I think the main decision is whether you want the apartment to be furnished or unfurnished and if you use of the weeks holiday wisely then a lot of things should start falling into place.

I am an actively minded person and I don't think that it's going to give me many problems identifying things to do.

Hope this helps,

Dave.

Default More to life then Tescos

I assume you are coming from the UK. Well there is Carrefours and I feel just as good as Tescos. But I get the impression you are a shopper and if that is the case look at some of the bigger towns and not just Paphos to live. I live 10 minutes from Larnaca in a peaceful suburb of Lievadia. 3 km to the beach. I dont like being to far to buy a loaf of bread and it is nice to park up on the sea front and visit the Cafes etc. They have two M&S and Next and Butchers with UK home made saugages etc , etc. But consider the weather....sking in the winter and then drive down and walk along the beach. UK is damp, dark, miserable, tax nightmare on everything that moves, racial problems.
You will feel lonely at times but shopping is the best cure and lets face it Cyprus is not New Zealand....cheap daily flights.

I am a 56 year old male on my own who works all over the world as an expat. Believe me Cyprus is one of the better places to retire to but have an escape route if you really feel lonely.
Good Luck

I lived near Paphos, but have now moved to Esentepe in the North! The Greeks hate foreigners and are mean spirited. I suggest taking a look North of the border before deciding to go South.

The reason you feel lonely is because you live with the Greeks. My partner and I live in the North and the people are kind and warm hearted. If you wanted a social life you chose the wrong side of the island.

I agree with Tim!

The Greeks hate us...I used to live in the South and would never go back. I love the North -- especially the town of Kyrenia and the area around Esentepe.
