Default Health Insurance

Hi,
We are Angie and Steve and new to the forum, and are hoping to go to live in Larnaca next spring and to look after my elderly English Mum, (my Dad was Cypriot). We’ve just come back from a visit, have been to the Alien Immigration Office and collected various forms, and just want to know if any one can advise us on what the minimum amount of health insurance for an individual will be required by the immigration authorities to have residency in Cyprus? Also, does anyone know of any health insurance companies we could contact?

As far as i know you do not need any health insurance.you can be treated at hospitals free or pay for private docs about 10-20 per visit.I have used hospitals myself on holiday and it was ok. good luck Tricia

Not sure if its the same In Cyprus Yummy, but in most EU countries you are only entitled to free treatment as an EU citizen if you are of retirement age. If you are below retirement age and dont work you have to take out private cover.
An E106 form gets you a certain amount of free treatment, normally up to 2 years, but after that you're on your own.

Is it not the same kind of thing in Cyprus?

We have seen some very useful information on a website 'Angloinfo Cyprus', we already have the European Health Insurance Card but think it can only be used as a visitor to Cyprus for upto 3 months (or when visiting England if you are living in Cyprus). Does anyone know of low cost private health insurance companies in Cyprus we can get some information from?

I would try and look at the Cyprus Living forum as it's a very active forum with lots of useful information. It is Paphos based but the members are very helpful at answering any questions. I am sure there are at least a couple of threads on the same topic, just do a search. You can find the website by typing Cyprus Living in google, don't think I can put a link here.

Yes you're right, the EHIC card is in effect for emergency cover whilst travelling

I've selected a health insurance company and they will be snding us a sample quote - they are Atlantic Insurance, I found them on a website, Cyprus Insurance (sorry can't do a link), will try some others in due course.

Thanks for your replies and tips

Thought you might be interested to know that we received a brochure from Atlantic Insurance, but it appears that you cannot take out a policy with them until you have been resident in Cyprus for at least 8 months. I have just checked out the Expats Health Insurance link and contacted MEDexpat for further information. Think we will have to pursue this further once we are in Cyprus.

I looked at BUPA International's website and got a sample quote which came out at over £350 per month for 2 people which is more expensive than other quotes I've had, and we are looking for the cheapest options at the moment. Expat Health Insurance came out expensive too. We will look at registering at Larnaca General Hospital once we are there and continue our enquiries as necessary.

We are hoping to go early in March 2008. Not long now!

Angie
