Hi Emma, you didnt say which area you were hoping to move to. After been to Cyprus a few times we have decided on Limassol. We have chosen the Heritage school, only heard good things about it. We are going back out there in a months time, hoping to look at accomadation again so will try and let you know what we find out. Good luck x

Smile to move or not!

Hi, I am new to this forum, but I have been reading with interest the posts on moving to Cyprus. We too are trying to decide on whether to move or not, my main concern is my husband being able to find a job easily. Luckily, as he is Greek the language would not be a problem. Our children are not bi-lingual so I would prefer they went to an English speaking school. Does anyone know if there are any youth work jobs there ? he also teaches motorcycle mechanics. I am a classroom assistant, so unsure if I would get a job easily. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

hi everyone my name is simone, we have been coming to cyprus for 10 yrs and decided to make the move out of the uk 3 months ago with my husband and 2 children 15 &7 yrs. It hasnt been what we thought it would be we sold everything in the uk house, static caravan, cars and our lovely dog to start our dream life. All we have had is disaster since we have been here. Our 7yr old has been to a school and got slapped by a cypriot and refused to go to another school. They dont treat you the same as on holiday infact they hate you being here most of them! The cost of living has gone really expensive, its ridiculous the prices of everday foods! The wages are outrageous my husband is a qualified sky engineer, plasterer and everything else he can do and he is only on 550cyp month for satellites (640english thereabouts). So when you take out your rent food and bills your really out of pocket by hundreds,.The bills are not low as they appear.for example our council tax bills are 44cyp per quarter, then you have electric and phone or internet bills which arent cheap. Many people like us here cant afford to live we thought we were doing a good thing coming here with are children but they hate it and were watchin every penny constantly. The clothes are very expensive and to be honest it has become a rich persons place to live as weve been told try spain!I just wanted people to read this before making the huge mistake we did saying to everyone we will be fine we wont be comin back where as we have to go back to put my youngest in school.By the way your children will have to go back at least one year my 7yr old was learning 1+3 . This is just advice if it works for all of you great it never for us, just to make you think before you give up those nice things in britain its made me wake up to what the uk has and what it offers. Also it is 16 degrees here at night now so dont be fooled by the weather we have a winter also. regards simone.

Default simone

Hi Simone, thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate what you have said, and I too have concerns about how good the 'dream' of a new life actually is. We had originally wanted to go to Canada but were put off by the ridiculously long waiting time to get in(4 years). Perhaps the best option is to have a holiday home to escape to! I will keep watching this forum to see if anyone else can offer advice or share their experiences.

Hi Dream, chaser. We bought a hoiliday home in2004 as we always wanted to move there full time. But having family commitments at the time, We decide to buy then as felt that if we waited we would never get on the ladder. We use when we can and let out(has paid for our visits 3 times a year)And as it was bought off plan it has incressed in value by 20000.We hope to move out next two years. We never planed to let out but it has gone well and we have taken on a few for owners to manage for them.Tricia

The key to any move such as this is always research, research, research. The more you do, the less suprises you will have.

I spent two years before we committed, and even then we didn't do it correctly. Really, we should have rented first before buying. We didn't, but luckily we picked the right area. We live in Spain, but the rule applies wherever you go.

Hi guys, its good to get different views on making a move(anywhere). I totally agree that you cannot do enough research on a potential place. We researched Canada for about 3 years, but found the long waiting time off putting.
As I have said, my husband is Greek, so that is part of the reason we became interested in Cyprus. We also need to give very serious consideration to education & health systems as our youngest child has some special needs, and requires support in school etc. Not sure what the support for additional needs are like in schools in Cyprus (or Europe for that matter!) My husbands work skills are quite specialist, so not sure how easy it would be for him to find work. We would like to live somewhere that has a fairly constant year round temperature, offers good education, good health care (for reasons already said) but doesn't take forever to get into! I suppose that is what most of us are looking for, suggestions welcome.
Will keep reading posts as they all offer something of interest. Thanks!
