Default Places to visit:East Coast: Sleepy lake and falls to fall for

It's perhaps the final frontier of the Kiwi summer holiday - an unblemished paradise where time slows and crayfish dinners and wide-open golden country are all part of the landscape. In the first of a five-part series, Herald reporter Jamie Morton and photographer Alan Gibson explore the hidden gems of the North Island's East Coast.

Today: Lake Tutira and Putorino.
Tomorrow: Rere, Gisborne and Tatapouri.
Thursday: Tologa Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Te Puia Springs.
Friday: East Cape to the backdrop of Boy.
Saturday: Waihau Bay to Opotiki and Ohiwa.
