There isn't a 1 year study visa that will give you a work permit afterwards ?

Per hour wages depends on the job and location. Tax can be easily worked out by googling "calculate my pay in nz".
Cost of living depends on where you live and what your likes and dislikes are but in general it'll be at least 15% more expensive here.

You must leave the country before or on the date your visa expires, unless you either :-
Get a post study job search visa after you have completed the studies - unsure if you would qualify for this ?
Get a job offer that will allow you to apply for a post study temporary work visa.

Sounds to me like you expect immigration will just give you a work visa just because you've studied here for a year ?
Studying here doesn't give anyone the right to stay.

It is possible to get a post study work visa after a student visa. I can't post a link but if you google post study work visa New Zealand you should get the relevant page from the ops manual.

There are conditions that you need to meet, of course. For the study visa you will need to pay for your course in advance of the visa being issued and you will also have to provide evidence that you have funds to support yourself during that time. If I you are not studying for a PhD (in which case you'd be classed as a home student and have different rights) you will also have to pay health insurance for yourself and any family members that come with you (spouse, children). You can only convert the temporary post study work visa in to a more permanent visa if you fulfilled SMC category criteria at that stage. There is plenty of information out there on this route if you google :)

There will be a lot of threads on here about costs of living. It varies depending on where you will be studying so you need to factor that in first.
