Default How did you "get out"?

Hi all,

Just wondering how you all managed to immigrate.
  • Did you marry a Canadian or attain common-law status?
  • Did you do university in Canada?
  • Did you do a course in Canada (a diploma or certificate)?
  • Did you attain a job offer? If so, how? What credentials did you have beforehand?

Feel free to elaborate on any of these.

It's just that I see a lot of posts on here asking questions partaining to these very questions (I am also guilty of asking, myself!), so I figured I would make a post for people who have successfully immigrated to share their experiences with the process.

I'm sorry if this kind of post already exists here in the Canada forum, but there ya go.

Qualified for the Federal Skilled Workers program. Got enough points so didn't need a job offer.

Am Canadian about to move to the UK to get married, but if the tables were turned and my fiancé was looking to come to Canada, he'd be "in" by virtue of our upcoming marriage AND also under the federal skilled w*rkers program. Just to see how he'd fare, I ran his stats through the government's online screening and he's got enough w*rk experience, language ability (he is a native English speaker and did his B.A. in French and German languages) and education to get more than the minimum required points to come over.

[having enough points is a start, but if your job is not on the POL list, you would need to get a job offer to get in]

Yep, this. When I read that person's comment, I thought back to taking the "quiz" deal. I got a 74, assuming I'd have 1 year of experience post university. This gives someone a slight upperhand, but it doesn't give you instant access. And the "job offer" part is only half the battle, really. Then you have to take the LMO into account.... That's where it'll get you.

Me, Canadian by birth. Mother, British by birth. Grandfather, American by birth. Wife, New Zealander by birth.

As a result of birth rights, marriage, etc... I can live and work in Canada, US, EU, New Zealand and Australia. I think that covers anywhere I'd want to ever live.

My mother, British by birth, was actually born in Hong Kong (English father working there for British government), so, while I am able to count to 10 and say Yes and No in Cantonese, I might also have some claim there as well that I have never explored!?

(As my mother was born a British citizen to British parents, but not on British soil, I was able to get a 4-year UK ancestry visa, which I turned in to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and eventually British citizenship, allowing me access to the entire EU.)
